Actually I can trace my lineage to the earliest days of Virginia and North Carolina then after my family served in the Revolution they became some of the first settlers of West TN. Unlucky for them nothing made Forrest angrier than Tennessee unionists so he broke his promises in the surrender and let his men steal everything the regiment owned. Many served the union in other capacities but the regiment my ancestors were in is interesting. You're half correct. The Deep South is where secessionist feelings were strongest while states like Tennessee and Virginia was more heavily divided by the issue. However secessionists weren't exclusive to rich plantation owners and on the other hand there were rich southern aristocrats who decided to stand for the union even if it meant costing them slavery.

The other thing you have to consider is that there has been a lot of demographic shift in 150 years. I can trace my Confederate ancestry through both my maternal grandmother's family and maternal grandfather's family. My ancestor through my maternal grandfather that fought in the Civil War joined up in 1862 in a Georgia Infantry Regiment that was replacing it's losses in South Carolina. After the war he settled in what is now North Georgia, in Bartow County. An area that I believe voted against secession. So that is one example of a secessionist ending up in an area that previously was not very pro secession. Also you have to account for white flight. A lot of people who's families were probably pro-secession have moved north out of Atlanta into North Georgia to escape the expanding reach of negros.

I know after the war a GAR post was set up and named after the colonel my great-great-great grandfather was in but he never joined because he died before the post was made. The colonel was a good man though. Staunch unionist but both sides admired him being a true southern gentleman and after the war became a lawyer to help his former men get pensions and also became a Congressman and pleaded for leniency and aid for former Confederates. Sherman actually gave a loose set of orders to his subordinates that he largely enforced (I'll copy paste it in chucks for ya), whereas the Bummers were not part of the Army, and did whatever they wanted. He could've stopped them, but he didn't want to expend more men or resources so deep in enemy territory that were still accomplishing his ultimate goal anyways, the destruction of the Southern spirit to carry on the fight. The South had a booming and very lucrative economy. Where do you think all the wealth was coming from? The problem was it was primarily agricultural in a time with very little mechanization, therefore requiring the use of slave labor. Had the South won technology would have advanced to the point slaves were no longer necessary regardless. Slaves were incredibly costly. A good field hand was somewhere in the range of $1500-$2000 dollars. As a frame of reference that amount of money would buy probably 750-1000 acres of land.

A staunch unionist like Grant only had in common with radical abolitionists the fact that they were on the same side. The same thing could be seen in the Confederacy. There is no way the average American today can understand the huge cultural and societal divides that existed at the time. People's loyalties, especially in the South, were fixated at much more local level. Any interference by outside authorities (of which there was a lot by the Federal government) was viewed as extremely hostile. So far I'm just hitting lots and lots of anglos who went to North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. They served in the Revolution and got land from the government so they moved to TN. Some of my family moved to Texas but I'm not entirely sure if they did anything interesting there. That said I think Texas and Tennessee should be good friends considering we sent Texas Sam Houston and Davy Crockett.

Well, that I can relate to, as I live in an incredibly conservative Southwest region. It's always the Democrats here that support easing up border control, because Mexicans will do the work that, apparently, Americans won't do. Which is total bullshit. Gee, I wonder if there's any similarities between the historic Democratic party which wanted to use a black work force in order to produce goods derived from physical labor and the current Democratic party which wants a Latin work force in order to produce goods derived from physical labor. At a discounted rate, of course, because Americans wouldn't do that job.

That's why southern democrats were able to cut tariff rates with the Walker Tariff, which couldn't be raised until southern democrats left and the Morrill Tariff was passed. Also why the Homestead Act couldn't be passed until 1862, because southern democrats blocked it afraid it would lead to more Western states that would choose to be free.

I have ancestors in North Carolina still. GI read that my ancestors who went their (their brother, my direct ancestors, stayed in Georgia) all pretty much stayed there, where as the Georgia ancestors went to a bunch of different Southern states.

interestingly enough I found nobody who fought in the Texas Revolution, even though they are all Texas obviously (I was born here).

I love Tennessee. I might even move there. although I think it may have similar problems to Texas
