I don't understand how people can become alcoholics. I can understand perfectly how people might get addicted to soda and things like that, but beer? That shit tastes fucking nasty as shit. I've had a few beers, mostly 2 years ago and while their effect on me was funny, sort of enjoyable, it wasn't life-changing enough to make me obsessive over it. Even when I drank, I wasn't really a drinker.I only drank with a friend when he lived with me, and when he left, I continued to buy my own beer once every few weeks but then just stopped cause there just wasn't much to it.

You can drink responsibly all you and not hurt others, but in a country where we have a welfare state, it kinda hurts tax payers when people drink to excess.

I'm a libertarian, and I'm against prohibition, but it's important to be honest about this. Alcohol is toxic. You might be okay with drinking now, but alcoholic cirrhosis is no joke, and God forbid it catch up to you. I've seen it happen to even young people, and to lots of good people. Seeing them die because they don't qualify or while waiting for a transplant is really sad.

Real strength is overcoming addiction. Giving in to peer pressure, which is how people usually get into drinking is weakness.

Recently stopped drinking about a month ago. I had been drinking consistently between 6-9 drinks a night 4-5 nights a week for about 3 years while going to school for comp sci and holding down a part-time SE job and GF (now fiance). Quit cold turkey, had insomnia, anxiety, sweats, heart palpitations and felt like shit for about 1.5 days and anxiety and lack of appetite for another 3 but I made it through and feel awesome. Been lifting instead. Quitting the distilled Jew is tough. Now if I drink at all it's like 1 beer or glass of wine max when I'm out to dinner and I don't drink to get drunk or catch a buzz. I don't have the urge to get drunk any more because I scared myself out of alcoholism with the withdrawals. I finally feel free again. It's nice to not feel like a slave to something.

I quit after drinking heavily every night for 12 years. I wanted to quit really bad. I drank 5 glasses of wine, a 6 pack of beer, and some whiskey every night.

I waited until I was sick with the flu. Then I simply didn't drink. Since I was sick I was probably having massive withdrawals but hell if I know, I felt so bad from fever and shit, who cares?
Haven't touched it for 2 years now. Don't have urges.
