Jainism offers very little that Hinduism does and really just focuses on the asceticism, they really just share a somewhat similar sense of Dharma and rebirth.

Buddhism at the time of it's origination was very different from the Hinduism but now that Hinduism has been influenced by Buddhism over the centuries they are more similar. Buddhism and Hinduism in many ways are two sides of the same coin.

It's not as though Buddhism is simply a more refined and more rational Hinduism though, they take the opposite position on many important issues. If anything, Buddhism is a highly heterodox branch of Hinduism mixed with sramanic influences.

Just because Indians are more comfortable with colorful and fantastical religious iconography than westerners does not mean they forget that a basic premise of Hinduism is that all the dieties are simply aspects of one ultimate reality. Yes you may have a few uneducated people in India who say otherwise but most educated Indians will tell you that and every mainstream Hindu group will as well.

There seems to be a misconception on /pol/ that most Hindus at some point became polytheistic instead of adherents of monism.

Thanks for the thread. I consider myself a Hindu. The Gita is a great book and it really helped my life.

What I have pulled from it all, and my own meditations, and reading about vedanta, is we are all parts/expressions of the whole. And God/the Universe/etc is inside us all and everything. It's really beautiful and makes sense to me.

It's the best book for westerners to read to start to understand Hinduism and eastern cultures in general. It will help prepare you well to read some of the actual texts like the Upanishads etc.

I haven't subscribed to a certain branch of Buddhism yet, although I have explored in practice Zen traditions, and multitudes of traditions academically. I am currently more interested in the Thai Forest Tradition as of late, as it seems one of the few remaining traditions that follow the original rules laid down by the historical Buddha. I feel as if "skillful means" ended up confusing a lot of people in various cultures, despite the good intentions.

The nature of the mind is to always be grasping.

I suppose my concept of the soul, and the concept of the soul in general, is one of the biggest differences between Buddhism and Hinduism. I view the soul as a very tightly-knit chain of cause and effect; so tight that it appears whole. However, nothing is permanent; eventually, that tightly-knit chain will unravel, even if it is over multitudes of lifetimes. Just as a mountain may last millions of years, it will eventually turn to dust and sand.

I have just finished reading the Bhagavad Gita, although it was the one with the commentary provided by the Krishna movement. Is the Bhagavad Gita interpreted differently by the mainstream Hindu faith?
