Incorrect, they held pretty much the same beliefs as the the southern democrats as far as that went. What they believed was that all were equal before the law and that as long as others were not free, they themselves could not be truly free.

Its self-serving, though. They wanted to establish equality before the law because that principle expands to include themselves as a minority party amongst democrat machine politics like Tammany Hall and the principle of all being freed expands to disallow government from all takings.
