>Steve Bannon is causing a stir inside the administration by pushing an idea that's anathema to most Republicans: raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans to pay for steep middle and working-class tax cuts. (Some officials who've heard Bannon's idea think it's crazy, but the President's chief strategist believes it's a potent populist idea.)

Not exactly a Carbon Tax. That would just account for costs against the consumers, households, communities, and the planet. A Cap-and-Trade is a targeted level of pollution set by the gov't against different industries over time to decrease emissions. Where do you think the money goes after companies pay for carbon credits? The government. How does it get distributed? Depends on who is in charge. Seems like a great way to funnel money to bullshit companies.

To give you an idea, the US has reduced emissions from hydraulic fracking than the entirety of the cap and trade's existence in Europe.

Right but read the available white papers or analysis of solar and wind power. The technology will eventually (hopefully) be there but right now solar is about 27x the investment and wind is about 10x compared to gas turbine for the same energy. You could maybe to a cap and trade setup and like it says, keep moving it up through the years but right now the difference is so high it would effectively be a carbon tax. On the back end it could drive a innovation a little quicker. Also if the taxes were put in the right place that could be good but I don't trust that shit ever, no matter who is in charge. Finally, Suzuki puts a bad taste in my mouth ever since I saw him resort to ad hominem and sophism immediately in a debate.

Look here for instance. These guys are pro carbon tax but look at their summary.

Cutting taxes on the lower and middle class and raising taxes on the upper bracket isn't reaganomics, genius

And raising taxes on corporations is retarded *unless* you're punishing them for outsourcing jobs or offshoring profits.

Reaganomics meant raising taxes on the working class through social security and payroll tax increases and cutting taxes on the top income braket. That's as dumb as taxing productive business. Why would you punish people for producing goods and services?

The real taxation needs to be focused on parasitic finance (wall street) and not productive industry. Why would you want to punish corporations for building and manufacturing products?

There is nothing "Reagonomics" about a plan that raises taxes on wealthy, but lowers taxes on low/middle, and lowers corporate in-house business and investment tax, while punishing off shore tax schemes attempting to pool funds back into US circulation. You should never piss on the productive in your society, and give banks a free ride. The correct message takes a peace from all these "populism" arguments, because the correct message is, and always was, nationalism.

I don't see anything wrong with taxing the mega wealthy more. I mean the people who make multi millions a year. Not people who make 500k-2mil per year. Those are the people who own small businesses and taxing them heavily stifles job growth and local economies.
My family is wealthy, our family business/properties pull in 400-500k a year. When Obama took over our tax bracket changed and we got taxed to shit, couldn't hire any new workers, lost our company health insurance and now I pay $300/month for a super shitty plan. We have to pay massive property tax each year around 150k and if business isn't good or we lose renters we do run thin on funds. I live a good life, but a few small changes are enough to bump us down and ruin our business.

However it doesn't work if the super-rich are still allowed to get away with tax evasion or fraud as they have for many decades. The wealthy have always been able to take advantage of complicated schemes usually set up by dedicated lawyers, that most people can't afford. And that's the problem when you increase the tax for the wealthy: they have added incentive to hide their money abroad, maybe even leave the US.

This is the best possible method. There should be a 'Buffett' tax as well -- a 30% minimum taxation rate floor for those earning more than $1m to shut-down the effectiveness tax dodging. Personally, I'd opt for a more nuanced version, but that'd take more time to explain.

why does big brother need to double dip?

They can't. Well, I mean they could, but then they'd just get bought up by some other multinational corporation, who has been saving 10-20% per year for a decade. My cousin does some programming stuff, and he's constantly flown out to the states for meetings and whatnot. Because it's cheaper for the U.S. company to fly him out, and have him email whatever projects he's working on for them, than hire people to do it locally. Hell, even the currency rates are a bonus.

This is fucking stupid. How the hell is the wealthy's money supposed to trickle down if he redistributes it to the middle class? Makes no fucking sense.
