Because human beings love substances that alter their experience of life, and always have. So do other animals, when provided (i.e. alcohol and mammals).

Unfortunately, "addiction" is merely the strengthening of bonds to the point of habitual repetition. Everything that feels good will eventually lead to "addiction" unless the person alters their course.

So yes real addiction is degenerate. But we use all sorts of chemicals, vitamins, and minerals in our daily lives, and the boundaries between what is moral and immoral are not always very clear.
