ideally, it's a tool that prevents society from going degenerate. Problem is that the leaders become corrupted and lead their flock astray. Each religion has a remedy for this, as long as they are informed. Much like our secular political system. So, yes, religion is politics for simple minds. Not inherently bad or dangerous, just depends on how the model is wielded by those allowed into power.
