On some level it is hard to deny, there is some European identity lying deep down in all europeans. There are deep similarities, christianity, common history both ancient and modern, the indo-european roots, the deep cultural ties etc. Of course there are massive differences between a a dutch person and a Greek, but the homogenization of Europe is not something bad, as something new, stronger and more lasting may be built out of it.

On the other hand european identity is something of political abstraction used to justify a forced EU integration. I don't have a particular problem with the EU as an institution, but the way it functions and it is led, it is because one group of liberals gain ascendance and drown all other european voices. The way they implement the European vision is decisively globalist and not pan-Europeanist, of a Europe being pro-European and euro-centric.

Nationalism overall is a thing of the past, nation states on their own cannot do anything anymore, there is still time to salvage pan-europeanism and purge the EU of its bad elements.

Fun fact: the most bureaucratic crap of EU politics wasn't caused by "communist" or "socialist" but by the much too strong corporate influence of the EU.

Best example:
The planned regulations towards a cucumber or banana curvature regulation (luckily it was dropped) which was one of the more silly things going on in the EU and this was ridiculed big time in germany.

But the problem was, that this wasn't a brain fart of some EU bureaucrat living in an ivory tower. The demand for such a indeed ridiculous regulation, that cucumbers or other vegetables have to be straight to a certain degree, came straight from the german retail industry. And the EU politicians were eager to please their corporate overlords to the disadvantage of customers.
