Well medical use is one thing, I'm talking about recreational use. The problem with the war on drugs in this country right now is that we're not really trying. It's just an excuse to criminalize it and fill our private prisons. It's about making money, not actually stopping anything.

The war on drugs won't work because we use a supply side strategy. The idea being if we can kill or arrest all the people who supply the drugs there won't be drugs for people to use and so use will go down.

Doesn't work for most drugs that are easy to make because there will always be poor third worlders willing to harvest coca and refine it into cocaine and organize to distribute it. you knock off one cartel another one replaces it near overnight. The only drugs supply side tactics KIND of works for is complicated drugs like LSD where it takes legit chemistry experience to make it. But that only works temporarily at best too.

Best way to reduce drug use is to lower demand, which is hard because unchecked, drugs create their own demand, even if you kill off all current drug users, the next generation will have its own drug users.

Education and treatment are the most effective ways at lowering demand, along with legalization of some of the safer drugs that results in lower demand for harder drugs and substitutes.

IE when they made a massive LSD bust in 2000 that cut off 90% of the world's supply of LSD, what it did was create demand for LSD that was filled in with research chemicals, 2C series and then 25i-nBOME which is far more dangerous than actual LSD.

Weed prohibition has created demand for fake weed substitutes like spice and k2 which have killed people (far more dangerous than actual marijuana)

So in some cases you legalize something like weed in order to curb demand for spice/k2 and maybe some other harder drugs like opioids (states that have legal weed have had opioid deaths drop by 25%ish or so was the figure I heard)

anyway, a real war on drugs is hard in a country like the US where the borders are pourous and there's just so much demand for the stuff. It's easier to control contraband on small islands.

I really dislike people that tout weed as being the best thing ever. I wish I could throw every stoner on the planet into a deep well and then fill it with concrete.

All that said, I enjoy smoking from time to time. I'll have a stretch every year or two where I'll smoke a bit when I get home from work, read a book, play a game, draw something. I'll kill an eighth and then stop smoking for another year or two. Will that change when I can buy it in my state next year? Probably, I'll probably smoke a bit once or twice a week, but I don't let it dictate my lifestyle, nor should any substance dictate how you live yours. Dependence on anything other than air, water and food is a disease.
