I got a job in public service(to be precise libraries), before I got it I spent two years working full time in the community with the disabled and volunteering three days a week in a school library, one day a week at a charity organization library and one day a week at a different government organization in the same field(a museum).
I also have a masters degree in library sciences.

I was one of four guys hired in an intake of about twenty people. Half the women hired had no experience at all in my field, no experience working with the public, children, the disabled or non-English speakers and since then(three years) about half of them have quit.
I went out and absolutely padded my resume with all that shit specifically so I'd stand out as someone who wanted that specific job, almost half the people they were looking to hire just put their hands up for every job they saw until they got one.

The time before that, for the same organization I didn't get past the first interview round.

When you apply for government jobs you don't just send them a CV: they have this big thing with "key competencies" and shit to discourage them getting bombed by CVs from people that aren't "in the club."

Who is in the club? Mostly it's networks of women, gay men and non-whites. Those people tell each other how to get hired at these places and when they get themselves into positions where they choose who is hired: you better believe the exploit it.

Oh, that's the other thing, all the health and safety stuff is made for women, so we're told not to shelve for more than half an hour a day and not to lift anything too heavy and all these other things about gripping strength and body motion. Stuff I can do for hours in my sleep is "too dangerous" for female bones.

Mostly married middle aged and older women(no-one gets fired and they keep the jobs for life so they don't quit), some younger qts just out of college but it's mostly older married women right now and the qts are usually engaged or in long term relationships and got the job to basically help save up for a house or to pay for a kid. There's a ton of flexibility in the job hours which makes it great for new moms.

The reason I'm still going okay at the job, I think, is that I literally work any shift they give me on a moments notice no matter what, when or where it is. So I'll drive more than half an hour to the other side of town and work six hours with ten minutes notice on my day off(not like I was doing anything else anyway) while parents with kids and the qts with boyfriends and social lives just can't do that.

Its not really a big secret tbqhf, most companies put your resume through a computer program to weed out candidates. I don't know how it is in Australia but for US gov jobs all you really need to do is add the buzzwords from the job description they post(e.g. if the job description has the wording "needs strong leadership skills" the program will look for "leadership" in the resume and weed out those who don't have those words in their resume).

Girls are better than boys at the wordy problems and they are weak in mathematics, so the course has been redesigned to favour girls. Also the mathematics subjects have become less difficult over the years, especially the 4 Unit Maths. The key competencies stuff is so that those charged with hiring can have a """"neutral"""" and """"objective"""" standpoint on who they hire. People literally tick boxes based on the KSC's and then the people with the most amount of "points" get to the shortlist, and they use a similar thing in interviews.

I've been on the other side and this is how it works. It's super hard to get your first public service job because it's often the case that the go to people moving horizontally or have had their contracts lapse.
