When did the Left claim gay rights, and under what authority?

Surely any Left Wing regime has been contre to gay civil rights, even in the west. Communism and Socialism and all the flavours of each has never been conducive to gay civil rights. East Germany, Russia, China, et al. At what point did Leftism become synonymous with gay rights?

Historically if we look at the Stonewall Riots, which sparked the gay rights movement in the US and subsequently the western world, the Stonewall Inn was run by the mafia. What freer market than the mafia, right? It would seem that historically it's been the capitalists who've driven gay rights, in that they don't care whose money they're accepting (save for a few bakers we can't stop hearing about). Even multinational corporations like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, et al are sponsoring Pride events for this very reason.

Gay marriage itself should be a matter of individual rights and small government, something the Right should be championing, but in the last few decades it's become some weird Marxist bullet point. So at what point did the Left decide they would take credit for gay civil rights, and why?
