I can't speak for all public schools obviously, but in my home economics class we spent our time watching tv shows about cooking and filling in crossword puzzles instead of cooking for ourselves.

And learning about the roman republic involved watching spartacus and filling in the blanks on a worksheet for a day after reading some blurbs in a history book.

This isn't from some rural shithole underfunded highschool either - this is at one of the best funded high schools in a relatively affluent area. You don't recognize how bad it is when you go through (kids think it's great they aren't doing much serious work), but it gets more clear as you look back on it in retrospect (Assuming you have ever, for example, taken an interest in any of the subjects post graduation).

For me, I genuinely learned more about rome from playing Rome Total War and reading Tom Holland's Rubicon than I ever got out of school. Likewise european history with Europa Universalis. These two VIDEOGAMES taught me more about history than my entire education up to graduation did.
