Pretty much, every state was a former colony and have their own rights and obligations under the Commonwealth.

Australia has 3 tiers of government, Federal (which is in Canberra), State (which is in each state's or territories capital), and local which is just your local council which handles bin busses and shit.

Territories are a bit ifffy under the law, I don't know much about the political structure of the Northern Territory or the ACT, they exist as Federal territories and thus have Federal representation, but instead of having Premiers and Governors like other states, they have administrators and chief ministers.

The only thing I can think of that we do differently is our form of government, barring the obvious difference in head of state, Australia uses a variation of the Westminster system so we have a parliament with an upper and lower house, bills are debated in the lower and passed along to the Senate (upper) and then debated on again and then passed with the Governor General's signature (Representing the Queen).

The system allows minor parties to be able to have some influence on the passing on bills, for example the Greens are a minor party but hold considerable power, and back when we had a Labor federal government they were held hostage by them.

American "patriotism" is not any kind of genuine national loyalty, indeed it could never be because America is not a true nation. It is a commodified bastardization of what nationality means to suit the interests of Capitol Hill. I'm sure there are true nationalists that happen to be American, but if you want to make a multicultural state with no real national identity across every continent you aren't one of them nor would such a thing make way for a prospering folk tradition.

I'm not a constitutional lawyer, but I did once have a crack at politics and the way I see it is that the States in Australia are ultimately sovereign as the Federal government exists by the consent of the States as they have delegated certain powers and responsibilities to it, which is much the same with local governments which are a creation of the States and have certain powers delegated to them.

Territories are controlled by the federal government. A State can cede land to the Federal government, which is what NSW did to create the ACT and SA did with giving up the NT.

There are a few differences between States and Territories. All States have an equal number of senators, which was taken from the American system of government so that more populous states like NSW and VIC can't ride roughshod over less populated states like TAS and SA.

Territories have senators at the pleasure of the federal parliament, which is why the NT and ACT have two senators each as opposed to the 12 that each State gets and other Territories like Christmas and Norfolk Islands have none.

The other main difference is that when the federal government grants autonomous government to a Territory such as the NT and ACT, it can overrule what those governments do. E.g. Years ago the NT legalised euthanasia and then the federal government overruled it.

The federal government cannot overrule States, except for where State laws conflict with federal constitutional powers. E.g. A state can not legislate to allow homosexual marriage as the constitution grants the federal government power over marriage.

All of Australia from the east to the WA border was originally NSW. TAS was then hived off, followed by SA, which later had its boundaries extended. VIC was then carved off and finally QLD. The NT was then still NSW, but being cut off via QLD and SA, it was handed to SA who after a while gave it up to the federal government.
