How can you possibly not understand this, Sweden? Tipping in America lets restaurants price their food more cheaply by anywhere from 15-25%. They are able to do this because they are able to pay their staff significantly less than they otherwise would, as they're expected to earn that money in tips. It's not just a little extra cost of the meal tacked onto what you'd otherwise be paying.

It's still an annoying system and most of us would rather just pay ~20% more and not have to worry about tipping, but it's culturally entrenched.

I have worked in the service industry for years. I would love to scrap tipping and just have my employer pay my full wage. Honestly though, i would not push 100% like i currently do though, because the wage would be guaranteed.

Running your car is much more expensive than most think and if you're doing it for ~$12/hr long term you're basically doing it for free because of wear and tear. But it is trivial to find articles on what happens when American restaurants experiment with "no tipping" policies - they compensate by paying their staff more (at least minimum wage, which depending on the state can mean tripling or even quadrupling their wait staff's salaries) and correspondingly hike their prices. Joe's Crab Shack recently tried it and that's what happened, you can pull up other articles for plenty of other restaurants that have done the same.

Because this is /pol/, I know somebody's going to say, No, they don't need to hike their prices, the restaurants are all just run by Jews trying to squeeze as much money out of their customers as possible, but that's not true; if you know anything about the industry you'll know that the average restaurant's profit margin is really very thin and they truly cannot afford to triple (or even double) their servers' salaries without taking in more income.

Its one thing to anticipate a standard tip, and another to fucking expect 15 dollars on a 100 dollar meal that lasted maybe an hour and a half.

Eating out in Europe can be more or less expensive than in the US, depending on what restaurants you're eating at and what country you're in, same as eating out in Manhattan is usually just a little bit more expensive than eating out in Kansas (or not - if you're savvy and careful about picking where you eat). I wonder if that's because in Kansas you don't have to tip? Or could it just be that food & services cost different things depending on where you're eating for a whole host of reasons?
