There's aerial pictures of the surface of Area51 and there's a huge runway which has been extended several times. These extremely long runways are needed for aircraft which are designed to fly at high speed like the SR-71 Blackbird.

This was a plane so fast that evasion tactics against missiles was to simply speed up since it could outrun them. These kind of fixed wing aircraft typically have a flight profile that mean they need to fly at high speeds most of the time which means high speed take off and landing, requiring the extraordinary long runways.
