I'm friends with a lot of veterans, and I think it's the other way around. In America people have been trained over the last 30 years or so to instinctively defer to veterans and give them gratitude and appreciation, even when the civilian doing the praising doesn't actually know anything about the military or what is involved in serving. There's the immediately "oh wow cool you were a Multichannel Transmission Systems Operator that's so noble thank you for defending our country", with no follow up.

Go to the county job center, there is a VA rep to help out of work vets get training, write a good CV, and gain employment. Become a Merc for Honeywell, Dynacore, etc. you know the crew. They have some lucrative contracts. I would only do this short term with an eye to putting down a tax-free stack of cash on a home. The last option is Post Office, they actually hire vets. Getting in is a pain in the ass sixth month rodeo, but it pays decent.

Treatment of professional soldiers is why I went reserve instead of ARA. In Australia the reserves are held almost exclusively for domestic defence (you can choose to deploy overseas if you want) and the government con only override that if they are in a dire situation. They sent barely any reserveists to Vietnam so people would sign up to that to dodge conscription. I like reserves because I can defend my homeland if I'm needed and pick up some skills/make some mates along the way without being delpoyed to a third world shithole.
