I know here in TN sites in the Nashville area are extremely endangered since the city is more interested in developing the land rather than to try to preserve any of the battles. If a battle happened in major cities they're usually endangered in general for the same reason. Certain neighborhoods are lily white, very clean, and safe with educated, hard working people then you have working class black neighborhoods that suffer from the gangs then you got the shitty ghettos. The brutality he forced on women & children had nothing to do with ending the war early. The was over when Atlanta finally fell on September first. Sherman did not begin his March to the Sea until 10 weeks later. He set out on a brutal mission to "bring Georgia to its knees", and for what? Sherman was a blood thirsty lunatic, who delighted in the suffering of women & children. Hell, he bombed the civilian population of Atlanta for a solid month before the battle. When he left Atlanta in mid-November, his mission was to kill as many civilians as he could. Regardless of the BS story of feeding an army on the move, what they did not eat, they killed, so civilians could not eat. They dumped animal carcassses in water wells, to poison them. They destroyed all stored food, so the civilians could not eat. To make matters worse, they destroyed all means to procure food the following year, by destroying farm equipment. The One Saving Grace that Southerners had that fall & winter, was Yankees left the "corn field peas", as they thought of them as only fodder for livestock, which they already killed. We know them as black eyed peas, and that's all they had to eat in Eastern & Southern GA during the winter of 64/65, and that's why they're considered good luck to eat on New Years Day. Seriously. Are you familiar with Sherman's entire history in the war? In the beginning he was actually considered one of the most gentle generals. He was very concerned in making sure the southerners were happy and his men never hurt the locals and that POWs were fed and clothed and so on. What he noticed however is every time prisoners were freed and he used this gentle approach the southerners returned to the Confederate forces to keep fighting. They returned to their farms to keep growing food for the Confederate military. They returned to their shops to collect whatever supplies they had for the southern war effort. This is when Sherman realized that the war would drag on forever as long as there were southern farms growing food, southern horses being bred, southern men returning to Confederate regiments. This didn't mesh at all with Sherman's goal of ending the war as soon as possible so he could finally stop killing his own former friends he would often meet on the battlefield. So this is when he did a total 180 and became the Sherman we know now. Was it cruel? Of course it was cruel. Sherman admitted as much. He didn't pretend that it was humane. His goal wasn't to be humane. His goal was to end the war. He didn't care if the south saw him as a demon as long as they were so heavily demoralized southerners would refuse to aid the Confederacy anymore and it worked. In that sense it's very merciful. Would having the war go on years longer and letting far more men die in battle be better? The Confederacy was doomed, Sherman sped up the process by that point. You might as well ask me to hate Nathan Bedford Forrest who used similar tactics to Sherman.

Funny you mention Andersonville since some relatives of mine were sent there. Since we're on the topic of looting it might be fun to mention the 7th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. When they surrendered to Forrest the conditions were that only their military arms would be taken and that officers could keep their horses and the enlisted could keep their personal belongings such as paychecks, valuables, and their issued uniforms. On the trek to Andersonville however Forrest's men looted their own prisoners and took everything they owned to the point where when they reached the prison the other Union prisoners noted they didn't even have the clothes on their back anymore and were forced to eat and drink while at the prison like wild animals and bury themselves in the ground for warmth at night. Colonel Hawkins who led the regiment attempted to talk to Forrest and Duckworth about the lootings but they basically ignored his pleas and turned a blind eye. Without any of their supplies or clothes their death rates were astronomical and some of the highest out of all of the regiments who were prisoners there. Both sides did shitty things. That's hardly "yankee apologist." That's being realistic.

There are no rules in war southerner. They said fuck morality by stepping on our southern soil, scavenging resources is no moral arguement in the wake of the atrocities waged on our blood. Do you know who your family members were during that time period? If you do it's usually a piece of cake with Ancestry/Fold3 since you can just put in their name and where they lived and see if any results match.

Atlanta Author Stephen Davis who wrote, "What the Yankees did to us", after a presentation at Gettysburg recalled a couple from NY who asked him, what they could take home to their friends back home about his personal views of the war. The battle of Chattanooga is fascinating American history and is unapologetically confederate. The view is incredible and the museum next to it has great confederate memeroblia and a cool 3d show showing the battles on the terrain. It'll usually take some digging and maybe a little note comparing but it's definitely worth it once you score. Especially if after you get the information you can sometimes find books or pictures on those ancestors or their regiment. Some of those documents will also give you a rough idea of their history in the war although maybe not in as much detail as you wish sometimes.

Researching the battle of Chattanooga would be fun for you if you like the confederate side of the civil war. Abraham Lincoln recognized Chattanooga as a strategic position to infilitrate the deep south. Union soldiers controlled the city (around 3000 people at the time) while confederates controlled the ridges around the city as well as the Tennessee river which shut down there supplies going into the city. My campus at the university of Tennessee Chattanooga has an original confederate wall and turrets with a Freemason symbol inscribed in the stone. Spoopy

Here's a pic from point park looking over moccasin bend (because the island looks like a moccasin). Confederate troops did not allow the passage of union ships along this river at this point because of the uphill advantage, as well as uphill advantage of multiple adjacent ridges (signal mountain, raccoon mountain, missionary ridge)
