Neville Chamberlain understood that a war in Europe would drain the UK of more resources than it could spare and end the empire. So he desparately tried to delay such a war and if he could, avert it. That's a retarded reason. There were first of all plenty of problems. FIrst off, a united and victorious Germany post WW1 might continue their naval expansion. That might mean that the UK could not raid Germany's shores at will.

Second of all, it was just a piece of paper. You didn't go into the war because you cared about Belgium, but because a future franco-German alliance might result in a future where your naval supremacy might be challenged.

The Germans tried to ally themselves with the UK since the Treaty of Versailles. But it never happened, because the UK didn't want it to happen.

He could probably have gotten a free and reunited France, a guarantee for future polish independence, and an erasure of war debt for a peace treaty. Would have kept the US out of the war, would have let you hold on to your empire, would have let France hold onto its empire, and a trade alliance with France and Germany (a proto EU, so to speak) would have meant that you'd have the economic power to take on the US.

And we'd not have the FUCKING SOVIETS RUINING EVERYTHING.
