It was part of Bavaria until Frederick II cleaved it in half to punish the Duke for failing to send military aid to his campaign

Because it would have taken a lot of effort for minimum gains. Switzerland might have the best natural defenses of any country to ever exist. You'd have to climb through mountains to get to it, mountains whose passes are rigged with explosives and have built in defensive structures. Have fun driving WWII era tanks through the alps. It would have been a fucking nightmare to invade. The best bet would have been to bomb them into submission, but if they don't submit you've wasted a ton of money and time.
Combine that with the fact that they were neutral and the risk/reward analysis doesn't pan out.
