The TV was like a holy, otherworldly force with a mind of it's own. Something the average person had no control over. And the events of history it depicted were totally rigid, set in stone, the unchangeable wheels of history marching on. Nobody could stop it, or even influence it in the slightest.

It's easy for me to see how every little attitude and thought of the American consciousness could have been shaped by the TV screen.
