Pension crisis, NJ is officially broke. So is NY, that's why Cuomo was pushing for 'emergency funding' of the subway because of pension debt, they have no money either.

These US cities and states are teetering on becoming completely insolvent:

>Extreme insolvency
- Jersey
- IL
- CT

>Can drag it out a few more years insolvent
-CA
-NY
-Most cities in TX, esp Dallas and Houston but the state itself is OK having shifted the debts to cities.

This is all because of unfunded, pension liabilities. Every government shills pensions with the promise that the market will have high returns for their pension fund, then they steal money from the fund to hand out gibs to get reelected (like Cuomo did). They delay the inevitable until the debt is so large that they can no longer function and have to declare bankruptcy, or get federal bailouts. Right now the common solution to this is to simply slice pension benefits to nearly nothing, play games with inflation to pay out less benefits, and to lie, lie and lie some more claiming the market will put all the money back but CA for example only had 0.6% return on their pension for 2016, and they expected 7%. These shortfalls add up and before you know it they owe hundreds of billions in pensions and can't pass a budget to keep the lights on.

Moody's and other credit rating agencies who analyze risk put the total amount of unfunded pension debt in the US at something like 4 trillion dollars. Even Trump couldn't pay them all off with bailouts if he wanted to.

>This is all because of unfunded, pension liabilities. Every government shills pensions with the promise that the market will have high returns for their pension fund, then they steal money from the fund to hand out gibs to get reelected (like Cuomo did).

This is exactly what Dallas did under Mike Rawlings. They raided the pension for gibs then came back this year asking for more taxes to keep the pensions from going under. The taxes in Dallas are already going up due to people moving, especially from California, and now they'll go up even more to fund those fucking pensions.

I'm just glad I live in the suburbs outside of Dallas. The cities out here don't have those sorts of problems (yet).

>>131973758
NY did the same thing, Cuomo now steals from emergency funding and passes shit like the sugar tax in order to deal with the debt temporarily. He knows that it's all going to come crashing down but his job is simply band-aid it and survive until the next political ladder comes along he can jump to (like a potential POTUS run in 2020). Rawlings doing the same shit, just delay until he can run for a bigger office and leave the mess to somebody else.

NJ, CT and IL are most fucked right now though as CT failed to pass a budget, and are openly considering going 'bankrupt' (they technically can't declare bankruptcy).

If all these states do crash under Trump (they already are crashing right now) then it's a blessing for the poor fools who live there as Trump now becomes their defacto governor. He will bail them out but under his terms, like dissolving the teacher's union strangleholds and shit by directly funding students with vouchers not the government. He will also directly fund the police and everything else, the democrat scumbags in charge will have all their corruption audited and will not get a cent.

Honestly the best thing to do would be dissolve these bankrupt states and make new ones, but hardcode in 'no more gibs' into the new state constitution. Otherwise they will need bailouts until the end of days. There's no point in saving these pensions, they're just going to keep slicing them down via inflation shenanigans and benefits cutting until they are next to meaningless anyway (but will still cost hundreds of billions).

A few states like PA, the solution was to cut off new employees and put them on 401k plans/Vanguard Index funds which is a better solution with better returns for them, guaranteeing actual income when they retire.

The people left on the pension were told "don't worry, in 31 years the debt will have sorted itself out with the high returns" which is yet another bullshit song they sang before but it's reality. Remember governments hire like 60 jews to run these pension funds and they all take a cut on returns. If the returns are shit, the jews don't get fired either because it's government.

If I were you I'd look into Vanguard Index Funds and just dump some income in there expecting the pension to not exist in 30 years when you retire (or be so slashed, it pays next to nothing).

I'd also look around for some remote work, as they hire teachers all the time at Khan Academy, Udacity, Edx ect (check jobspresso.co)

What? Why? Our state troopers literally wear nazi uniforms. This state is fucking nuts.

>>131973378
Interest rates in most of the west are nearing 0%, with negative interest in some countries. Lenders are forced to loan money or it evaporates, so they allow increasingly risky lending to people who really can't afford it, and will inevitably default. You end up with these increasing cycles of debt, and somehow it gets repacked via derivatives and other financial wizardry into something buy-able on wall street, giving if nothing else the appearance of a healthy finance system.

Many state and even the federal government, needing money for welfare and other <insert whatever> programs took loads out of the pension system, thinking it would be made back during future economic boom times. Ofc this never happened so you have all of these unfunded liabilities. Compounding the issue further is a tax base reduction, lack of jobs that is only going to worsen with automation, and the fact people don't retire if they can help it, again due to needing money for things like inflated health care costs.

Keep in mind a lot of people ended up with these pensions as part of their benefits package, and paid into them (usually a % of every paycheck), and having them stripped is effectively robbing them of what was paid out over many years. Social Security has similar problems but the federal gov can just print money ad-hoc, debasing the dollar further and kicking the can down the road.

It's a total mess with no simple solution.

There's a few states with actual funded pensions, but I would never trust politicians. They will just steal from it later at some point and hide the fact until politcian 2.0 comes around and discovers a 100 billion unfunded liability.

>>131976223
Should have never offered pensions in the first place, every economist knew it was a scam at the time and still does. Politicians and union leaders looking to get into politics of course pushed for pensions.

NJ, CT and IL are like, Puerto Rico tier though they are seriously in risk of becoming 3rd world any day now with no budgets passed, billions in liabilities and no possible way to pay off debt. When they go CA and NY will quickly follow with civil unrest as they discover their gibs have run dry and they got scammed.

The other anon pretty much covered this, but here's a quick rundown for anyone 25-35:
> Any government guaranteed pension you're paying into will likely either not be there, or cut to a fraction of what you're being promised
> SS will likely be such that not only will you pay more than previous generations into it, but will get less back out, assuming they don't find a way to kick things down the road again.
> You're much better off investing the money yourself into diversified securities (stocks, bonds, etc.) and adjusting for risk over time than trusting a pension plan.

I can't stress this one enough- Some regions of the USA may become a lot less safe as the money runs out and wealthy/intelligent people leave. Think inner city white flight, just it's literally any person who can rub 2 cents together will GTFO. All that will be left are the poor, desperate folk with no money, and nothing to lose. Literally a breeding ground for crime and unrest, with governments there either too poor or too corrupt to do anything about it.

>>131976636
Most of those pension systems are 50+ years old, it was a pretty standard benefit through even the 80s. Of course, back then people actually tried to think things out 50+ years than just making through the next election cycle, or financial quarter.

the main thing that changed is governments are way less transparent than they used to be, so they can steal money at will.

they are also way more likely to hand out gibs, as every liberal special interest group wants bike lanes funded or tuitions (which just skyrocket when govt backs their loans) and other nonsense which can only be paid by raising taxes, which no politician wants to do so they steal money from pensions.

the market is also shitty now, as it's essentially run by robots who trade on information so fast it's not even public yet, essentially piles of HFT bots trading between each other rigging the market. There is workaround this but this brings to final point:

finally you have the actual administration of the plan, which requires dozens of middle men and like 20 board members who recklessly invest the funds into crony companies of the current government or national party lobbyists, then steal their commissions from it regardless if they make expected returns or not. They never make close to returns they expect, currently in the low >1% per year with inflation rising faster than returns. They make shitty returns of course because they are administered by crooks

But the problems is that they don't group districts together. I grew up in Medford NJ. A small town. But in Medford there was Medford Lakes. A very small town. The problem is that Medford Lakes has all of its own services. Big Chris tried to get towns like this to share services or consolidate services to save tax payers money.
Medford distract has 4 high schools. About 6 middle schools. And probably 6 elementary schools. That's a fuck ton of teachers. Each school has its own princeable. They have 3-4 secetaries. All the salaries run $150 grand + a year. And they leave and get all the sick and vacation time that is unused. Those totals run upwards of $250 grand

NY spends 20% of it's budget on pension debt every year and that number keeps increasing. That doesn't even scratch the debt, which is like 300 billion so far and grows daily. Worse yet NY governors pretend the problem doesn't exist and try to hide the real debt, producing nonsense stats like "we only owe $60 billion not $300bln" because they use a shady return average of 7% every year which in reality it's 1-3% if that these days.

In about 5 years you're looking at 1/4 of all NY income being spent on just pension debt, let alone all the other debt the governor has incurred handing out gibs. In 10 years it will be so large a debt and payout that NY won't be able to keep the lights on at the legislature.

The casinos have state comptrollers or something like that, that monitor money flow on a daily basis. Those jobs were deemed " non essiental " before but the state panicked last time this happen and made them " essiental ". AC is dying anyway. They should just let the ocean take it over.

Both. All bridges coming into jersey are free. But if you wanna leave jersey, you gotta pay a toll.

Same if you sell your house and plan on moving out of state. You pay the exit tax. Jersey is also one of only two states ( I think ) with a death tax ( estate tax they call it ) which taxes your estate very heavily when you die.
>>
>>131978343
Stock markets literally run on magic at this point, traditional tools like Technical Analysis only sort-of work for day trading, and seem to be unreliable for long term without taking a LOT of other information into account. The only unrestricted market at this point is crypto, which thankfully hasn't been co-opted (mostly) as of yet.

The HFT bots can't account for everything yet, but they're getting spooky good. It's not uncommon to see them reacting to news even before human traders have finished reading what just hit on a Blomberg terminal. What you mention about corrupt boards that get paid no matter what is kind of the dark underbelly of finance. You have that, but you also have nutty things like this:

And yes, they just passed a law that limits / caps the amount they can collect when they retire. But they can't retro activate it for the teachers that were working before this law passed. Which just passed a year or two ago. So we basically have 23-24 more years of this shit to pay for.

And these teachers that work in the ghetto cities and Abbot district don't give a fuck about the kids. They just like that they get paid more because they can't get teachers to come into their schools otherwise. They likely play a version of martingale strategy where they pay for higher returns now with increased losses if some event in the future happens. This is how very successful hedge funds can beat the market for decades. There is hidden risk somewhere and you better jump off before it is realized. There are a few quant outfits on Wallstreet that can do this but getting out is key, and that will be the real test. They could easily lose all that 65 billion tomorrow if some rare risk they didn't include into their strategy mirrors the returns with losses.

As common plebs without cohosting our billion funded trading bots at NYSE all we can do is ride the average of the market, over a period of 2 decades or more, as low cost as possible which is essentially Vanguard Index funds.

Worked at Jane St Capital after graduation. Knew nothing about finance, they taught me, all I knew was programming. By teaching me it was one big red pill when meeting the quants who actually put together these strategies all based on probability that acts on stats faster than the competitor's bots can act on them. OCaml supports algebraic types, so you can turn abstract math structures that analyze dynamic risk measure theory into programs, then unleash your probability strategy with billions of other people's money for fame and fortune.

Finance is fun for a while (long, long hours, big pay or gigantic pay if you are one of the quants) if you can program go work for Two Sigma or Jane St to get a crash course on the current state of the market.

I made enough money during my 5 years there to not need to work for a while so I don't do anything, sometimes I make trading bots for cryptocurrencies as that shit is completely unregulated and fun to pick off amateurs with, though the risk is so much all the models I learned in real finance don't translate to imaginary finance.

That's not so bad.

In my city the only gas station that has someone come out and pump your petrol or help you is the Chinese owned one near me.

The rest is all Indian owned and they are lazy cunts. They will have 2 workers sitting inside watching tv or listening to the radio and 80 year old women need help and they are to lazy.

>Christie made supporting a $34.7 billion budget that includes 73 Democratic priorities contingent on a proposal to overhaul the nonprofit Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, aiming to tap into their surplus to finance drug treatment.
>Christie said at a news conference on Friday that he and Senate Democrats, who have agreed with the governor, still had not reached a deal with Democratic Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, who refuses to consider the Horizon legislation.
>Christie's Horizon proposal has perplexed some conservatives, who have rallied to oppose the legislation. Labor groups that typically align with Democrats, like the state's largest teachers union, also oppose the idea.
>Christie has cast Horizon, which opposes the measure and has parked a mobile video billboard displaying anti-Christie videos near his office this week, as a giant, greedy company that is abandoning the charitable mission the state had in mind when the state designated it as a health services corporation. Horizon has four board members appointed by the governor.
>Christie referred to the video as "a carnival" and attacked Horizon for spending money on lobbyists.
>Businessman and publisher Steve Forbes called Christie's plan political "extortion." Americans for Prosperity has come out against the proposal. The pro-business New Jersey Business and Industry Association, typically a reliable Republican ally, has abandoned Christie on this issue.
>The Senate approved a different version of Christie's initial proposal on Horizon. Rather than tapping directly into Horizon's surplus, it requires that the state insurance commissioner set a range for Horizon's surplus. When the top limit is exceeded, then the excess cash would go toward programs to benefit the public and policyholders under the Senate bill.

Christie did literally nothing wrong

I'm originally from NJ, has happened at least 10 times in my life time. Happens to a lot of complex high population states, typically isn't big news, just means stuff like the DMV and public libraries are closed for a few days.

Fresh off the boat, from reddit, kid? heh I remember when I was just like you. Braindead. Lemme give you a tip so you can make it in this cyber sanctuary: never make jokes like that. You got no reputation here, you got no name, you got jackshit here. It's survival of the fittest and you ain't gonna survive long on 4chan by saying stupid jokes that your little hugbox cuntsucking reddit friends would upboat. None of that here. You don't upboat. You don't downboat. This ain't reddit, kid. This is 4chan. We have REAL intellectual discussion, something I don't think you're all that familiar with. You don't like it, you can hit the bricks on over to imgur, you daily show watching son of a bitch. I hope you don't tho. I hope you stay here and learn our ways. Things are different here, unlike any other place that the light of internet pop culture reaches. You can be anything here. Me ? heh, I'm a judge.. this place.... this place has a lot to offer... heh you'll see, kid . . . that is if you can handle it.

I feel bad for the rest of Illinois, because it's pretty much Chicago singlehandedly shitting on them while ensuring they have nearly no representation on a state level.

It's like upstate NY's situation except somehow worse and more corrupt.
