So I was in 'Nam not long after relations with the US opened back up, so it was still starting to westernize. Western-style bathrooms existed in urban areas, but they were still trying to work out how to get it right. Lesser city? Squat toilet in a shack, manual flush. Farm? So the first think was a half-built fancy tourist destination men's room with actual urinals all over. They all got plumbed in to one pipe and that pipe sloped down into the end of the room where is issued into a floor drain. Curious variation on just pissing in the trees.

The next one I though I knew what it was until I started relieving myself into the fancy new urinal and then my feet got wet. A closer look revealed that each urinal actually only was attached to about 3" of pipe straight down, with the expectation all the urine would run across the floor into the central floor drain. They weren't hooked up to a water supply in that one, either, so it was like one big room with half of it endlessly coated in dried humid urine.

Plumbing is so strangely fascinating sometimes.
