Russia wants a natural gas pipeline that runs through Syria, Iran, and Iraq, and then straight into the Mediterranean.
This means that Russia and her allies will control the output and export of all natural gas from Iran, giving them huge leverage over western europe, which already relies on Russia for most energy.

The globalists of the west are in opposition to this plan, so they intentionally destabilized Syria so that they can overthrow Assad and replace him with someone who will play ball and divert the pipeline through Turkey instead of the Mediterranean.
