As far as the question, as I understand it they'd generally view other Marxists as not doing Marxism properly, which lead to a pseudo-nationalism based around them being the only "proper" Marxists.

Stalin later changed policy a bit as a tool to subjugate conquered lands. Russification was just a tool to rope in the Baltics, Czechs, Polish etc etc. It was never because communists are true nationalists.

Their current nationalism is partially based on the commie period but not because of the communists but because Russian bydlos view it as a time of superiority to other slavs. Russia felt themselves the dominant part of the SU so therefore they were "great" and "lol other slavs are inferior" mentality was born. It had little to do with commies actually being nationalist.
