Copy editors have been the first people out on almost all writing related gigs. Because they're second fiddle and they exist to guard against making people look stupid, just like the sign says.

If you've ever seen people making fun of "The Grauniad" you know why this is important.

But with massive cuts, it's now up to each writer to be their own copy editor. It makes sense that you'd try to save money there. If I was working with other writers, I'd suggest just sending the article to the guy on your right and reading over someone else's work in return; what you really need is fresh eyes to catch mistakes.

Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately the economical incentive to do this versus hiring clickbait bloggers is completely one-sided.

The only outlet I know have done well selling rigorous journalism is The Economist.

I think Foreign Affairs has some good editors too but that's a submission based political magazine that costs a good chunk of change.

The market for "quality journalism" is so small I doubt it'll ever be more than a niche product for expensive magazines or premiere subscriptions online (you can save a lot by having Foreign Affairs as a digital only sub).
