I'm actually Irish as in from the Republic/southern Ireland but I can't help but have a sneaking admiration for them.
People keep calling them reactionary, far right, whatever but all they are is a conservative party that has never compromised on their social policies.
In the 1960s, they were certainly already the more conservative of the two unionist parties but they were still very much mainstream for the time. They haven't changed, the world has changed around them and they haven't (much).
It's just hilarious to watch everyone get so outraged that some conservatives actually didn't just go with the flow and cut everything out of their platform to get with the times or whatever. The other hilarious part is that because of how autonomous Northern Ireland is, they actually get away with implementing policies that tweak the nose of modern Britain.
"B-but how is that possible it's 2017 this is wrong gosgjisogjaiooheoghwo"
Well, that's just how electoral politics in Northern Ireland is. There are people doing things the average BBC journalist, Redditor or Guardian columnist doesn't like and getting away with it. They'll have to deal with it.
