The great flood story is a commonality among many very separate ancient civilizations.

When the ice age was coming to an end, great inland lakes formed. They also released very quickly into the sea. Leading to massive rises in sea level in very few days.

Oral history distorts it over time...
Bigger boat, more animals...all died

TL;DR: floods caused by end of ice age

I don't know. I just figured it's a pretty important moment in the doctrine of Christianity, right? Adam and Eve, as described in Genesis, were tempted by Satan in the Garden of Eden. They allowed sin and death into the world. Christ later died to purify us of those sins, right?

I figure that for Christians, it's pretty important that they take that literally.

I've asked my Christian friends this, and none of them take it literally. They say that Genesis "is a poem," but that doesn't answer my question. It might be poetically told, but is it a work of fiction or not?

Unless you are using it ironically, in which case, means the stuff you are posting is bait and need to fuck off. Noah would have only taken 2 of every animal indigenous to his area, obviously he did not travel the world in mere days collecting 2 of every animal.

There's a difference in putting your faith in science, something that follows the scientific method, instead of lies that will never change. Scientist may be wrong everynow and then and that's what you want. For something to be able to be proven false. How selfish is it for someone to claim that their religion is right without any evidence to back up their claims? So you admit that believing in the flood is crazy?

>Noah would have only taken 2 of every animal indigenous to his area, obviously he did not travel the world in mere days collecting 2 of every animal.
No shit. But the flood killed EVERYTHING not aboard the ark. Surely you're not implying two of every animal from the bronze air middle east somehow repopulated the entire earth and led the way for the sheer amount of biodiversity we have right now, all during the time of humans, right? Because that would be fucking stupid as shit.

>>131849610
Shit you got us.
>>
>>131848881
Here is a hint: it wasn't every species on Earth it was species indigenous to his area as there was literally no way to travel the entire planet back then in the time he was given to build and collect. Even if it was every species on earth, collecting 2 of a species is easier that 2 of every animal on the planet.

>You realize evolution doesn't necessarily contradict creationism right?
But that's exactly what it does. You have a very poor understanding of how evolution works. There's a population of hominids that are changing, when we look at fossils 1 million years ago and compare them to 250k years ago we don't find any of the fossils at 1mya because they've all eventually changes. Homo sapiens neaderthalensis likely went extinct because the subspecies became bred out with Homo sapiens sapiens. It's a lot like "save the white race." If all whites mixed with other races the white race would be extinct. If creationism were correct we would find every single species that has ever existed all be together at one point it time. We would find dog fossils with dinosaurs if creationism were true.
>>
>>131849765
Yes but every species that was not on the ship died due to the ridiculously high sea level, so according to that, every species we have today was on that ship. >From my understanding, original sin is a critical doctrine of Christianity.
that doesn''t mean its critical doctrine of the bible, I pretty much disregard all "theosis" on the bible to be wrong, because it pretty much is at this point. its also a critical part of the doctrine that reincarnation isn't real despite the fact its in the old testament when you study the Souls interactions with Sheol, and read Hosea carefully. I also believe I was given the Gospel of Mary Magdalen by the holy spirit in a bible reading session and it states

25) Peter said to him, Since you have explained everything to us, tell us this also: What is the sin of the world?

26) The Savior said There is no sin, but it is you who make sin when you do the things that are like the nature of adultery, which is called sin.

>Christ died to absolve us of it. You deny this?
no, Christ died to redeem mankind, what exactly he redeemed us for is up for debate. from my understanding the plan to redeem mankind with the blood of the Son of God on the Cross was created before Adam was even created, and before Genesis 1:1.

>So we've been discussing why Noah's Ark and the flood are pretty much impossible. Do you take that one literally?

well, pretty much every single culture has a story of a world consuming flood, its even embroidered onto the symbolic meaning of the Chinese letters, right down to the 8 survivors. I do quite literally think that the great flood happened, at this point I wouldn't doubt that there is an Ark sitting somewhere between Iran and India. but I'd also point to the name "gopher wood" to highlight how in the gnostic gospels, Christ states that the story of the flood didn't happen, and how mankind (meaning possibly millions of survivors) hid in underground tunnels, with gopher word maybe being a pun for this.

I also subscribe to the Geocentric (stationary earth) model of the universe, so take that with a grain of salt, or realize its one of the ultimate redpills.

>well, pretty much every single culture has a story of a world consuming flood, its even embroidered onto the symbolic meaning of the Chinese letters, right down to the 8 survivors
The first part of this isn't wrong, a lot of cultures have flood mythology. However, have you ever looked at the different flood myths from around the world before trying to use that as evidence of a biblical flood? You might want to

>The first part of this isn't wrong, a lot of cultures have flood mythology. However, have you ever looked at the different flood myths from around the world before trying to use that as evidence of a biblical flood? You might want to

well, I just did, it all seems quite consistent with eachother, and further supports the idea that
1) a flood happened
2) benevolent beings saved people who lived by the laws of creation
3)a lot of these stories have a boat, or chest of some kind
4) animals were preserved
5) the world was destroyed due to degeneracy

here's somoething interesting
Zapotec (Oaxaca, southern Mexico):

The Angel Gabriel warned Noéh that a flood was coming because of mankind's sins. Noéh warned other people, but they didn't believe him. He built an ark and took pairs of all animals.

HMMMM

>You poor bastard.
lets put it this way. Most of these cultures claim they received the ability to write, develop agriculture, architecture, and many things that go into civilization from "sky people"

anthropologists state that these traits were randomly created at different times from cavemen who just accidentally made civilization after developing from tribal groups

obviously one of these 2 things are wrong. whose word do I take? the people who wrote their histories at the time? or idiots who are speculating, and disregarding each cultures respective account on the matter.

A work of non-fiction doesn't have to be factually accurate. It's not as though any science monograph which is released is only non-fiction until it is disproved.

As for the fact that it's "poetically told", how could you expect something written way before science proper even existed to be told in any other way?

Floods happen all the time. Furthermore, doesn't the diversity of flood stories pose a problem for """people""" who believe everyone except 8 people on a boat were wiped out?

>5) the world was destroyed due to degeneracy
Again, it sounds like you're cherry picking.

I have to go to bed, but I guess my question is: Was genesis fact or fiction?

The great flood is a factual event and ancient civilizations all throughout history have made record of it

I don't take it word for word. Just an allegory to go by and apply to modern life.

North Korea's Kim Jong Il's birth was prophesied by a swallow, and his birth was signaled by a double rainbow and a NEW star in the sky.

He was walking at three weeks old and was talking eight weeks after birth.

He authored 1,500 books, an amazing feat.

Kim Jong Il did not ever defecate, according to his official biography.

He could control the weather with his mood.

Kim Jong Il recorded a 38 under par on a regulation golf course, a full 25 shots better than the world record. He was, and still is, the worlds greatest golf player by a long "shot"

He had the ability to drive a car at the age of three.

ALL OF THESE ARE FACTUAL EVENTS THAT HAVE BEEN RECORDED THROUGHOUT HISTORY! GET WOKE MORONS!

if you want more info you can take a look at every ancient cultures pantheon, and how they all state they receive writing from some deity of knowledge

here's a gif on how the English language was developed.

>Floods happen all the time. Furthermore, doesn't the diversity of flood stories pose a problem for """people""" who believe everyone except 8 people on a boat were wiped out?

no, not really, the bible states that Nephilum survived the flood, your point is fallacious

>Is your god a fish, or a jackal, or maybe even a snake or a frog, by chance?
my god is the monotheistic creator of the soul, who is quite literally a magic sky wizard

>How many of the stories did you read? Many of them don't mention the preservation of animals. Hell, one of them even states that the first of mankind came FROM the flood itself.

translation issues, forgeries, and fragmented records, some of these stories are a few paragraphs and some are barely a sentence. also NONE of these have sources that are actual source material (from the scripture or oral traditions) you're basically nitpicking and cherry picking trying to avoid the fact that the great flood happened.

>Again, it sounds like you're cherry picking.
funny, you just did the same exact thing, there are most of the longer accounts state the world was destroyed due to its evil, thats not really cherry picking, thats a broad shotgun blast.

>Very much so. The sky people haven't told me how to read or write yet.

>This is a really shitty way of generalizing human development. I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of man,

you really missed the point, shitty generalizations were made about human development that ignore firsthand accounts of the people you were there, and developed civilization. that would be like someone 2,000 years in the future said a Fish taught you to write and gave you letters ignoring a Journal written by you states your parents taught you how to write is housed in a museum, and got a government grant and PHD for making up some dumb bullshit. thats quite literally the definition of ludicrous pseudoscience

the "great flood" did happen, in a limited area, story of which predates Bible by 1000 years. Geological record shows that no global flood ever took place, regardless of what a bunch of bronze age illiterate morons told their gullible children.

HAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHaaaa

Are we now making the ignorant implication that Genesis is an eyewitness account? I can't even find that funny at this point, being that it is so uncritical in thought. Eyewitness accounts aren't written from an omniscient narrator voice, dummy. Same problem with the gospels btw.
>>

Also, see my list of absolutely attributed facts that are historically recorded regarding Kim Jong Il. Read the entire list, then ask yourself if you believe you know better, or if you should just trust the account of the people who actually "lived through it"?

Judging by the methodology you have presented, it would be better to trust the North Korean account of these facts (since they lived through it, after all) than to trust your own intuitions on these facts.

There are scattered instances of higher than average water at various locations. Ancient stories are irrelevant. These stories are older than the ancient bottleneck of mankind, which makes it no surprise that these stories have been subsequently passed to all extant cultures. Too obvi.
>>
>>131859819
child, you're so bluepilled your children will look like smurfs.

there are ways to prove the bible has origins outside of space-time, one way is how it writes history before it happens, the other are the mathematical properties and patterns, like Pi and Euler's number being found with the same equation between Gen 1:1 and John 1:1.

>There are scattered instances of higher than average water at various locations.

well, there's a lot more than that, just because you refuse it doesn't mean it stops being true.

> These stories are older than the ancient bottleneck of mankind, which makes it no surprise that these stories have been subsequently passed to all extant cultures. Too obvi.

all these cultures also state that mankind used to have a lifespan of hundreds of years.

its almost like the jews make science the opposite of the torah because we're goyim to them.

Depends on what you mean every animal? There are millions of animals, but only a few thousand (50-80 thousand give or take) need to stay dry, and the majority can be kept from a very young age, therefore needing less space to keep. Plus we don't know the condition in the ark

>>
>>131846587
It's really funny, and extremely infantile. How completely disconnected from reality do you have to be to believe it would ever be even remotely possible to get two of every animal on earth on a boat? And then they just magically repopulated to modern day numbers with little complication? Oh, right, we're talking about people who legitimately believe that happened with a dude and his mud-rib wife. Fucking wow.

The stories of the OT are not to be taken LITERALLY.
They are metaphors and have a deeper metaphysical meaning (Jordan Peterson has a whole series about that on YT).
Origen (a theologian from the 3rd century) accurately stated that anyone who takes the OT literally is a fool and is to dumb to grasp its philosophical meaning.
Biblical literalism is a recent phenomenon and is a product of Protestantism.
