>colony needs a lot of amino acids, carbs, water, but has cells entirely devoted to digestion and passes energy to other cells, which can specialize in sensing food better, moving faster, (because the're not full of digestion organelles) so the whole organism can acquire more food

Kind of like one person can gather produce, but a bigger person can get produce and kill meat, and a group can take down huge prey, build complex tools like dams/mines/plantations and get lots of nutrient dense food with little danger of it all disappearing
