It's overstated. U.S. median household income is about 52k. Alabama is 42k. When you correct for the very high black populations, white households probably make a little less than U.S. median.

I took a wrong turn in Benton County MS and went down a back road.
Literally there were dozens of black kids running around naked in front of this one house hootin and hollering.
It's a dead end so I turn around. As I drive by the house again a pack of adult nogs (who were blacker than black) are running off the lawn towards my car.
I speed off and get back on the highway.
But to answer your question anon, yes, they are poor, but mostly due to high negro populations.
