It doesn't help that much of pop culture promoted the idea that men and women should be caring for each other as equals. It led to many men expecting that relationships with women should feel like 50/50 partnerships, which is not a scenario where the average woman will respect the man. Because if a woman has the money to live independently then they won't feel the need to seriously consider staying with their current man. This is part of why wealthier guys can get the pick of the litter, the women that get with them recognize that they can't just break off at any moment and continue living so nicely so those women will try doing more to stay with the guy.
