Half of the British government was against and involvement, the prime minister at the time was just a spineless guy who let his foreign minister stuff his branch with anti-German people (you know, guys who warned about a German threat for at least two decades) and a war minister who desperately wanted war just for the fun of it (looking at you Churchill. Look at H.H. Asquiths memoirs on the topic).
The topic of Belgium wasn't even war worthy, but the foreign minister Edward Grey made it so important, that it became a national incentive, just so war was coming (Grey was in favour of war against Germany as early as 1904) against Germany and with France. He even secretly made deals with France that inevitabely made Britain part of the war.

While I agree, that Eastern Germany was much more nationalistic in its way, as it was free of the guilt idea that Western Germany was, in a way that said

West Germany did not come up with this idea itself nor was it planned:
Labour immigrants were necessary due to a lack of labour shortage (and obviously not being able to get Polish or Czech workers) so they looked for the closest poor countries, they could get workers from, which were Turkey (western at the time) and Italy. They never intended for those people to stay longer than their period of work.
This also goes hand in hand with the guilt-complex. which was established by the anglo-saxon community, especially the big Jewish community in the USA with its justification of building Israel.
This re-education saw a close relationship with the US, which was itself multi-cultural and therefore spread its ideas over to Germany.
Unlike Eastern Germany, which was under the controll of the USSR, western Germany was under the close surveillance of France, Britain and the USA to never redevelope national pride.

This of course changed with the EU and the fall of the Berlin wall, but until then, society already had changed
