It's relatively simple to get a self-driving car with current tech. Google's been working on it for years, Tesla's got a crap version in their current lineup.

But all of this requires a driver at the wheel still for safety and liability reasons.

The only way a truly autonomous vehicle - especially a big ass truck that could kill dozens in seconds - gets off the ground legally is when computer vision is perfected and can be proven to discern major differences in what it can detect on the fly and react accordingly.

Right now computer vision is incredibly primitive and can basically work with large shapes that programmers assign basic rules of reaction to, but there are far too many gray zones to not have an automated vehicle not detect the line of school kids in front of them and plow into them at 90mph.

So yeah, once that is figured out, then you can worry. I think that will take at least 30 years the way advancement is going.
