Oh, I saw the burn barrels with bums standing around them. Stereotypical "urban hellscape" stuff like that. Niggers at the basketball courts playin ball and shouting about everything. It's the sort of thing that's hard to describe. Not chaotic. Actually, for Chicago it was unsettlingly calm. You could sense the danger of the place. The absence of any signs of community spirit. Stuff like that. It's like walking through a pack of hyenas when they're all resting. Unsettling if not outright intimidating.

Apparently with blacks if you had a beef with a guy (black, immigrant, etc) you just found them and fought them, rarely guys got killed but that was life. With white guys they lawyer up at the most basic assault and your whole family gets screwed, suddenly the NYPD is all up on your block fucking with you. Kinda made me feel invincible.

I was hoping to see them again next time I went to Chicago. I don't know why, but they created a feeling in me that was hard to describe. In a way, despite being terrible, they conveyed a lot about the city that the downtown/business loop area just couldn't say.

The south side was really a sight to behold in the 80s/90s, which are the memories I have of Chicago. I hear crime has gotten worse, but something about the internet has taken the anonymity away from the murders and made them less enigmatic. It used to be that you'd hear gunshots, see the ambulances, the police, etc, and never hear another word about it. The anonymous city was a place where things would happen, but the act would be absorbed into the body of the city and forgotten by everyone except for those involved. Thousands of murders went that route... A blurb at the back of a newspaper that only exists as microfiche in a library today. Gone forever, basically. 1000 crusty yellowed papers in a box at the back of a police storage facility. No digital trace, no photographs, no youtube videos of the grieving families.

I miss that era for some reason, and I don't even know why.
