At a meeting between Italian Ambassador to the European Union Maurizio Massari and EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on June 28, Italy broached the subject of closing its ports to non-Italian-flagged humanitarian ships that bring it boat migrants they have rescued, Reuters reported. Italy would not, however, close its ports to ships participating in the European Union's Frontex rescue operation. According to unnamed sources, the Italian move might represent a bid to force EU partners to take the migrants instead. Since 2014, Italy has received over 500,000 boat migrants.
