Because the supposed goal of politics is to create a country that makes its citizens as happy as possible. Therefore it doesn't make sense to exclude 50% of citizens because they don't earn much money.

Now, does it make sense to exclude citizens because they're idiots and don't know anything about running a country? In my opinion yes.
There should be, for example, a knowledge test that you have to pass to vote.
