Why doesn't the Italian Government and the NGOs simply return these people to the African coast, if they insist on "rescuing" them?
Sure it's not completely safe there, but at least you a) stop people drowning, if you can't bear not to help them and you b) discourage others from attempting to do the same in an attempt to reach Europe, and in doing so save more lives.
Bringing these people to European soil is actually killing more people than it is saving. Because as long as people think there's a good chance of being ferried over to Europe, they won't stop.
The EU and these NGOs are responsible for the fact that people keep drowning, because they are essentially encouraging people to risk their lives.
