Many people here on pol seem to believe in some sort of Hobbesian political theory... Such kind of theories are called "gothic" and - - much like Nozick or even Rawls--they posit:
>all humans will try to pursue their egoistic needs to the maximum extent. No matter what.
Thsu, according to the Gothics
>justice is just a matter of regulating competitions between agents
>such agents are rational. Their needs might be the result of emotion, but they will always try to pursue such needs to the best of their ability
Sorry for the wake up call, but Machiavelli believes that, even though there are extremely competitive individuals... Most are nowhere as competitive as a Gothic thinker would expect. In fact, the real risk for democracy is to let the few competitive ones rule at your expenses... Just because you are too lazy to act for the common good.
Thus, better educate the few wannabe rules to act for the common good than force everyone to compete at all costs.
