Most of the time, they're depicted as wise-guy assholes or plucky losers you sympathize with. There have been several arcs or scenes where the female inmates openly sympathize with or befriend them, so it's not like they're trying to sell a message that all men are assholes. And every guy, even the rapists, have redeeming characteristics and sympathetic arcs, which I didn't expect. Pornstache could've been totally irredeemable, but his exit from the show was falling victim to a false rape accusation and all of the female inmates feeling sorry for him, especially when he said he loved her and wanted to raise their kid, which the one-legged guard didn't even do.
The guard who straight-up raped that one chick in the van is depicted less of a malevolent rapist and more of an idiot who didn't even realize she wasn't consenting. A couple episodes later, he chews out Luschek for disrespecting the inmates.

Most of the female characters have negative characteristics too. Even the "trans womyn of color" has a scene where she encourages her son to "practice on an ugly fat girl."

Believe me, I went in expecting that show to be pure SJW feminist pandering and a hamfisted satire saying "the prison is a metaphor for what life is like for women living in the patriarchy", but having watched a few seasons of the show, it's clear that's not what the show is about.
