Bicycles are truly great. It feels wonderful to traverse huge swaths of the country using only your own physical power. I bike commute 10 miles everyday. I love that fattys and cripples can't use them because they are physical failures. It also feels great outrunning a lycra clad faggot on a $2500 titanium carbon fiber bicycle on my $200 steel and leather bike while wearing my work clothes. I love knowing my unrivalled superiority on the road is simply because of skill determination and raw physical prowess rather than just throwing money into parts or a better engine like a motor vehicle.

Flase equivalency.

Abstract thought. There will always be a risk of a drunk driver, of a bad cycler, of a nigger thinking it's a good idea to visit your district, of a child getting in your way and you having to drive into something, if you're cycling too fast.

>>131650765
Is that an image of yourself?
The reason I call you over-feminized is because you don't wear a helmet because you're too concerned of what others think of you if you did.
I wear a helmet, because I can make decisions for myself. Literally not a single person in my life approved of bike helmets.
Once again, you're nothing more than a feminized, underage fruitball who acts beta to follow what his group, be it circle of friends or local community, is doing.

Let me sum it up for your puny brain:

Pros of using a helmet:
- Incredibly cheap life insurance, securing your head in 99% of cases.
- Will inspire children to do the same

Negatives of using a helmet:
- Some people on an anonymous forum will think you're a pussy

Soldiers also wear helmets, are they pussies for thinking they could get shot to their head? Even though the next enemy is a few miles away?
Were Romans sissies for using helmets, even though they had a big ass fucking scutum shielding their entire body from projectiles and melee contact?

The only fucking argument you can bring is that getting hit by a bullet in a skirmish happens more often than getting hit by a car in open traffic.
There are hundreds of thousands accidents involving bikes world wide per country.

You need to be able to ride seperate from fast traffic. Any road over 20mph should really have a seperate facility for bikes, ideally physically seperated from faster (and harder..) traffic. Riding in the woods works, but isn't necessarily ideal for A to B transport.

As a rule of thumb, if cyclists wear helmets where you live, the infrastructure is shit.

I used to think that bikes are a sign of a poor transport system. But now I live in a town with a very good bus and tram coverage and still lots of people use bikes. Bikes are cheaper (a yearly tram/bus pass is about 500 Euro, more than 40 per month) and faster for short trips. Overall I think it is good that bikes make extra competition for public transport. Prevents the companies from being too greedy with fares.

Seatbelts and airbags don't deter from getting into your car and going. You don't need to store airbags and seatbelts in a safe and preferably dry spot when you park. Helmets are impractical as fuck for people who use bikes like the average Dutchman does.. Not even the prime minister wears a fucking helmet, even though he does unironically ride his bike to work through the Hague (a city actually considered unfriendly to bicycles by our standards).

It proves that you don't need a helmet to survive cycling in this country. Also evidenced by the death-statistics... 189 cyclists died in 2016, and the number was lower before smartphones became widespread (don't text and ride, srsly). That's not a lot on 17.000.000 people.

alright lets just put this to bed once and for all:

BENEFITS OF CYCLING vs CARS (just off the top of my head)

1. ECONOMIC:
A. Saves taxpayer money because less destruction of road. Bicycles weigh 30-50 pounds. Cars weigh 3,000-5,000 pounds. Thats 100x more destructive to the asphalt for one car vs one bike. This means roads must be repaved more frequently with cars, which in turn means more wasted taxpayer dollars on the roads, and more wasted taxpayer dollars on the labor costs repaving.
B. Rider saves money in multiple ways: no gasoline, much cheaper maintenance fees (or none at all if you fix bike yourself), much lower initial cost (bikes cost $150 for decent used commuter - $5000 for high-end racing, while cars cost 2,500 for decent used commuter - $250,000 for high end luxury/racing).
C. Regular cyclists will have less health problems associated with obesity/cardiovascular/cancer than regular car commuters. This saves them money on healthcare premiums long term and saves taxpayer dollars if they have no health insurance and just use "free" ER.
D. Commuting time is a wash.
E. Less emissions from exhaust will be less health problems which will, again, save money on healthcare.
(CONT)
>>
>>131661091
I just lock my helmet to my frame when I park but I guess you don't use locks either because the niggers in your country have evolved from stealing bikes to commiting securities fraud and building pyramids.
>>
>>131661432

Please try getting hit by a car from behind with a helmet and see if you live... The vast majority of people that die on bikes in this country would not be saved by helmets, unfortunately.
>>
>>131661530
>Bicycles weigh 30-50 pounds
what kind of uranium bycicle are you talking about
>>
>>131661530

(CONT)
2. ENVIRONMENTAL
A. Bikes use less raw materials (probably roughly 100X less (weight is 100X less). This is a savings at the point of material creation/extraction, as well as shipping.
B. The production of a bike is less pollution at the manufacturing plant bc smaller, less materials, less complicated.
C. No gasoline for everyday use.
D. Less frequently repaving the roads is less pollution by repaving crews and less raw materials used.
E. Less health problems/serious accidents lead to less healthcare needs which is also a slight environmental savings in the form of less drugs/plastic/energy needed at hospital

3. PUBLIC HEALTH
A. Cyclists will have less cancer/obesity/cardio problems. This is a direct health benefit.
B. Cyclists will also cause less serious injury/fatality accidents than cars.
C. Cycling produces zero toxic exhaust from gas fumes. This will reduce cardio problems in urban areas (albeit slight effect).

4. PUBLIC WELFARE, QUALITY OF LIFE
A. Less cars on roads leads to less pollution
B. Roads will be less congested, there could be less road real estate period.
C. Less Health problems
D. Saved taxpayer dollars from road construction/healthcare can be used for other projects instead or merely lower taxes.
E. Smaller/less parking is more space for useful buildings, homes, parks, etc.
>>
>>131661432
>Implying you're immune to bad/distracted drivers.

>hog lanes of traffic without at least keeping as far to the right as reasonable able
>LOL I'M A VEHICLE SHARE THE ROAD YOU FUCKING CAGERS!!!

>skirt around cars and between lanes of vehicles lined up at a traffic light
>hop over onto sidewalks when convenient and/or use pedestrian crosswalks
>ignore red lights, stop signs, and other traffic signals
>LOL I'M JUST A PEDESTRIAN OF COURSE I CAN DO ALL THESE THINGS HAHA!

Bikefags are the fucking worst. I hope they all get what they deserve on DOTR

the world changes ya dingus. cars running on oil (internal combustion engine) will...yes WILL...eventually be replaced by other technologies.

Furthermore, don't pretend that oild companies rely heavily on personal commuter cars at all. Oil companies would be absolutely fine if americans never bought another car again. What are airplanes, freighter ships, trains, hell all of plastic manufacturing, all factories, etc

Many, but overall quite favorably in terms of international comparisons.. Safety is going down slightly in the past years, but my (entirely speculative, admittedly) feeling is that this is more due to cellphone use on bikes than anything else.

Vehicular laws concerning cyclists can dictate whatever they want but unless a cyclist is hit and the driver of the car doesn't speed off, they go entirely unenforced.

A bicycle is literally the best transport in a city, e-bikes and electric scooters are also good and you don't give up your autonomy unlike public transport.

People with disabilities are a minority not a huge swath of the population, they can ride the bus if they want to.

Even an of shape person can do their commute on a bike, and if you're regularly stuck in traffic with a car you'll also be faster on the bike
I do 40-70km every day on a bicycle.

Cargo bikes are nice if you're a fucking street vendor or ride 3 kids around like some Amsterdam-South soccermom, but besides that they're typically a bit over the top. They should put them as close to accessible, curbless street crossings as possible. you are the commie depending on big gov't to fight wars for you. gov't isn't pushing bicycles in any meaningful way, bike coalitions are. you apparently don't know anything about local/regional politics. go to some town halls sometime and you'll see that it's not "big govt" or "commies" pushing cycling, it's bike coalitions - cyclists who want more cycling infrasructure in their cities. it's as simple as that. they run the political/ideological gamut. i agree they might be "forcing their way of life (cycling)" on others, but it's definitely not "commies" or "gov't" in any meaningful way, it's just politically motivated cyclists.

You know something always bothered me about movies and shit in post-apocalyptic settings.

How come they never fucking use bikes? They will always use a car or walk. Never use a bike.

A bike is smaller and easier carry, plus compared to a car, easier to maintain and requires less parts to repair. They're also pretty commonplace.

Now the downsides is that it's still slower than a car and it still paints a big target on you. But I'd argue a car would too, since you're living in a vastly depopulated world, so the sound should be easier to hear when you're driving down broken down roads.

that may be true, but looking at wwii specifically (which was the point of your post), germany would've wiped the floor EASILY, if they were only outnumbered 10 to 1 or even 50 to 1. They marched right through "capitalist" france, uk, hell all of europe. It was COMMUNIST Russia and their seemingly infinite numbers of soldiers that stalled hitler into a stalemate.

do you even know wwii history at all?

i'm not retarded enough to say that "communism beat nazism" (even though, in a sense, it did, if viewing merely the nazy/russian theater). yet you seem ignorant enough to think it was american "capitalism" that "beat" hitler.

it was "communist" russia that "beat" hitler, but even that is inaccurate/incomplete.

given the overwhelming disparity of numbers, it seems hitler's nazism was far better at resource efficiency and military production than either american capitalism or russian communism. they were simply outnumbered thousands of times over.

if you've ever commuted in/around a big city (LA, NY etc), you'd know that cars are only traveling 4-5 miles an hour in dense urban centers. bikes EASILY beat cars in the densest urban centers speed-wise. in other words, if you live under 10-12 miles from your job, bikes will be as fast or faster than cars during rush hour. if you live over 15-20 miles from your job and can average 40-50 mph for most of the trip (then 4-5 mph in the city center), cars are faster.

so yes, it is a wash and depends on distance and route and city and traffic patterns and rush hours.

Probably like 3 or so. I have very vague memories of riding with training wheels, but riding a bike is basically the first thing most Dutch kids learn after walking. Swimming comes not long after, typically.

manhattan, boston, chicago (mostly), san francisco, seattle, portland, Washington DC and probably a host of other smaller cities would work beautifully as biking cities IN THE DENSEST CENTER of the city.

but yes, many western and midwestern towns are too spread out

Pretty early on I can't remember though, with the help of training wheels and by age 7 I was doing sick jumps with my BMX (and shattered my arm eventually).

What is the maximum amount of miles the average American (or (you)) would ride to work or school?
>>
>>131661429
this guy is right:
>>131667379

you should still at least do one day a week of relatively heavy legs, even if you're cycling 5-6 days/week

>can't even keep up with cost of maintenance and construction of 1 set of freeways, and this guy wants AN EXTRA set of freeways made just for semi trucks and 18-wheelers
>this kills the auto industry
>this kills amazon and causes tons of noise at nighttime around the city as delivery trucks scramble to deliver all the orders of the new world assholes who order everything online. also more accidents due to sleep deprived drivers

come on anon.

>LA
Average driving speed is 26 mph in LA.

>in other words, if you live under 10-12 miles from your job
Most bicyclists commute no longer than 4 miles.

>buses are disgusting and filled with trash.
this. buses are only okay in white only cities. trains too. they will always be filled with niggers and the poor who can't aford a car. if I were to make a city from the ground up I'd rather everyone walk (yes even the old/disabled (they would use wheelchairs n shiet) than everyone ride in shitty busses).

Me:
26 mi to work, 26 back, 6 days a week - did this for about a year
16 mi to work, 16 mi back, did this another summer
6-10 mi to school/work, 6-10 mi back - i've done this for almost 10 years off an on

the average "fit" american would probably only do 2-3 mi each way because they've never done anything longer, ad because the infrastructure is shit in most cities.

i am not average, but i'm willing to spend roughly an hour (10-15 mi) cycling each way to work/school because i figure that's an hour or two of cardio workout i don't "have" to do sometime else.

If (big if) americans were in better shape and had the experience of going on longer rides (over 6-10 mi), they'd be far more willing to commute 10-12 miles each way. it's really not THAT crazy of workout, you just have to get used to it a few times

Actually food growing and transportation is so carbon intensive as far as units of energy goes that it's not that far away from driving a car. If you have a shower after you ride/eat lots of organic meat/cause lots of car to shift to a lower gear while they are waiting for a opportunity to overtake, cycling is produces more carbon than driving.

>Average driving speed is 26 mph in LA.

i dont know where you got that number, but i can assure you that takes into account the off-peak, middle of the night freeway speeds of 75-80mph and averages it out. ACTUAL daytime speeds on most roads in LA (main arteries and main freeway in the city center) are definitely more like 10mph tops

>because you ride over 20 miles on the bike
I'm at a point where I can ride 200km a day, if the weather is perfect I can spend literally the whole day cycling and not get bored.
Would never go on a cycling tour of Europe or something like that though.
>>
>>131668261
it's not wasted if your commute is already an hour sitting on a freeway barely moving.

i shit you not, i started commuting on bike in LA because it was FASTER, not because i'm a commie or health nut or environmentalist (im neither of those in fact). it would take me roughly an hour to drive from west hollywood to USC, park and get to my job. it would take me 35 minutes to ride my bike. i didn't like getting sweaty, but i lived.

unrelated: i love the amount of butthurt a good cycling thread on pol causes

Except you can't actually cycle when they are that packed together without a serious accident, whereas you can actually pack that many people on a bus because they were designed for that.

I have solution. Variable pricing and variable quality. bus is divided into to parts. Forwards is seating only, back is standing only. Separate entrances. Tickets costs 5x more or teh froward part. Also you may put small buses (minivan size) on same bus lanes with similar 5x pricing providing smaller waiting times fro premium users. These segregates users, increases quality of service for those who can afford it and captures their consumer surplus for public transportation budget. At the same time continues to provide abundant, and cheap social transposition.
