Whilst it is wise for Poland to increase its military spending, it sounds like the wrong kind of spending. Poland seems to be at its best when it has a mobile, adaptable army. If it's invaded by a traditional power, it wouldn't be able to defend itself conventionally, and would have to resort to guerrilla warfare and resistance as it has done in the past.

Seems like they would be better off adapting to that, and training more special forces and irregular units, as well as building cheap, adaptable weapons to take out traditional armor.

That's mainly due to government demands and regulations. I work some with the F35 program and the mounds of paperwork the governments require is a full time job for a team of people.

Then there is the testing. In particular, ever part that is considered "flight" materials have to go through special testing of shock, vibration, corrosion, heat, salt/fog, etc.. Just trying to understand MIL STD 810 and PM-5010 is mind blowing.

The latest I heard being talked about is a change to all markings in, on, and supporting spare equipment for the aircraft. Since everyone does not know English, they were looking and I think still are looking at changing verbiage to universal pictures.

All of this shit drives costs. Now take all these requirements and times 4 for US forces (Navy, Marine, Army, Air Force) and then each individual countries armed service and try to make it a universal set up to meet ALL of their requirements.

When they talk costs, they can only blame themselves.

The reason why the F-35 was a moneysink, and is no longer a moneysink is because they encountered tons of problems in development and of course, the mounds of regulations. I've been to the F-35 hangar a few times at Eglin AFB, and I can tell you they are some beast.

But back to the costs, the plane automates a lot of the flying process and the pilot is allowed to focus on decision making and identifying targets, and the plane pretty much flies itself and once a target is acquired the pilot just has to press a button. The plane has millions and millions of lines of code that enable to do this, and they had to work out the bugs over a period of years, and found further ones through testing.
