A better explanation of the concept is: "an effect of a company's product that affects someone who is not involved with the transaction"

An example would be cigarettes as they affect people who don't smoke via second hand smoke related cancer.

"In economics, we have a concept called 'externalities'." Is she claiming to be part of a separate group that calls itself economics. I know it's somewhat wrong to criticize grammar to counter an argument, but if you're running to be an elected official at least give it a second read.

>this is the republican economic playbook

no, it's not. this is the western, capitalist democracy's playbook. every developed nation and every major political party on earth plays by those rules.

but it's only the republicans that need to feel bad about it.

top leftist logic right here.

This is a first year environmental studies concept that is abused to promote marxism.

It is pretty simple, when an externality has widespread negative social effects, the plaintiffs can petition for compensation from the offending party through class action lawsuit.

Positive externalities (benefits not paid for by all the consumers) are almost never compensated in reverse.

This is a minor regulatory issue that is currently on a more libertarian system. National socialist and Marxist doctrines of economics have a more top down approach to externalities but require larger governmental beurocracies to function.

Brian Wu (his real name) is peddling first year shut as if it is revelatory condemnation of conservatives. This is laughable and is just more evidence if political bias in universities.

>thinks it justifies replacing the free market instead of adding some regulations
>ignores huge systematic problems in non-free markets

Good one. When is somebody going to respond with an argument about supply and demand, incentives, crowding out, dead weight, the free rider problem, etc.?
>>
>>131641020
Yes thank you anon
It also really doesn't work in a 2d world and is much more complex that direct benefit or costs. Recent example; a poor country (I.e. unable to embrace socialism) Indonesia , has large communities that live on the trash heap. The trahs heap is very dangerous and terrible for health, but if you stopped them from accessing the tip, they would surely die because the forage the bulk of food from the tip as well as shelter etc.

Economics has no wing you funk bitch don't use it for your liberal agenda

Are people not being paid to clean up the lake meaning that now two people are gaining money for 1 loss. I understand it comes from the government since they have to pay the workers to clean it but it still gives the middle class money. Seems like the reason they pay taxes is for people to clean things and provide more money for them.

I'd also like to point out that by making big government beureaucracy in order to fix such a problem, you're concentrating power in a form that can be abused quite heavily. The big widget corporation can bribe the government to let it pollute and go after the company's competitors.

If you don't trust the system to fix it with class action lawsuits, why trust it with a powerful government beureaucray?
>>
>>131642381
Well that is a decend point. (First I've ever heard coming from him)

Hippies often cry out against mining and industry in general for polluting the earth. They place heavy taxes and sanctions on companies, causing them to move production into 2nd and 3rd world countries.

These countries often have lax or non-existant enviromental laws.
The companies also now have to import the goods over seas, causing even more pollution.

This is the fundamental reason why I FUCKING HATE HIPPIES.
They don't give a fuck about the Earth or the enviroment, only thing they want to do is circlejerk with like minded dumbfucks and virtue signal to normies.

>>131638461
what he is saying makes no sense. How is Trump care an externality? By the definition, it has to affect someone who is not involved in a transaction. When you are employed you are involved in the transaction (between employer - employee) so any adverse effects to your health are not "externalities". Ofc this doesn't even matter since most companies provide healthcare anyway, I just don't see her point.

>Tfw PhD in economics and masters in cost accounting (which actually specialises almost exclusively in production based theory and application)

This thing has no idea what it's talking about. What it's talking about is called a negative stakeholder, or a wastage (sic) recipient, pure and simple.

An externality is a force that is either directly or indirectly applied in regards to profit margin, or more traditionally, production itself. If it said something like "why is (insert greenie cleanup company) having to foot the bill to clean this up!" then even that would be borderline incorrect.

It looked up the first search result on Google (Wikipedia, which definition is actually incorrect and has been a point of ridicule regarding how incorrect Wikipedia is on anything technical) with no actual idea what it is talking about.

If you don't believe me then simply look up externalities in any book on Google Books.

People think that PhD's are some obscure class of citizen that work harder than the majority of the populace, spending their weekends at social events or something.

Every person I did my doctorate with sit on /pol/ and /biz/ almost exclusively with their free time. I don't think these people realise just how great it is to have a barrier-free means of anonymous board that is completely free. The anonymity allow people to actually speak their mind.

It's the one place where diversity actually works.

She's referring to economics class, I think. Whenever my friends and I talk about academic subjects we use phrases like "In English..." and stuff. It's not really universal, yeah, but then again most people know that you're referring to a class when you begin a sentence like that.
Of course, on the other side of the coin, it usually implies that whatever the class is correct, especially if no one else has taken the course. As a result, what is said is assumed to be fact, and can't really be challenged as an interpretation or opinion since no one else has taken the class.
