Things like this has made me come to realize how difficult is it to truly fathom "ideal" modern architecture. Outside of parts of the east coast and arguably San Francisco (to some extent), this country is almost wholly devoid of timeless, truly beautiful towns, cities etc. typical of Europe and elsewhere. There are scarcely no attempts to create anything organic, anything truly worthwhile. There are centuries old towns and cities that surpass anything built throughout most of the US, Canada, east asia etc. etc. Our conceptions of architecture and cities of the future are ingrained with images of overcrowded, pre-planned metropolis' dominated by soulless high rises and skyscrapers, which are all reflective of high population levels we would be far better off without.

Some of the worst I've ever seen has been the architecture shown in the new Deus Ex games. I imagine these were supposed to be presented with a clear dystopian element, but many modern architects idealize this and see this as something we should strive for. They're fucking grotesque.

It's always the same shit we go over every time in these threads so I thought I would add something new.

It's a scourge I wasn't really aware of. It concerns old historical buildings that have been painted in "modern" colours. Usually that means single block colours and often just white.

Historically, things were much more colourful and intricate. There's a service that helps restore buildings to old style colour patterns and tones.

This is the before where the house has been painted mostly white. Looks flat and rather dull.

There's no before shot for this one but I think the point is clear.

They repainted a shit ton of historic homes mostly in whites to "modernize" them back when. Tastes change, blah blah. But I think it's clear just like with the commie block bullshit that what they thought was progress really wasn't. It was a new kind of misery and the compounding of living in such an environment without any real decoration or art, all utilitarian, it's soulless.

The big plus here is that you can smarten up a lot of buildings using just paint, and you can do it in small scale.
