"At the outset, Britain planned to put 36 F-35s on each carrier. So stupendous is their cost that this has shrunk to 12. An unhappy naval officer muttered a year or two back: ‘Just so long as we can have enough to cover the flight deck in photos.’ The empty hangar space will be filled with helicopters, commandos, snooker tables — no, I am teasing about the last bit.
"

Perhaps the british should buy chinese knockoffs to supplant their losses

I half think the F-35 program is just a front and all the money going into its development and the deals to buy it are actually smokescreens for something else entirely. They've spent like a trillion dollars on it so far and managed to get a Jet that's barely passable by modern standards. They can't be THAT bad at designing Jets, right?
>>
>>131624283
>managed to get a Jet that's barely passable by modern standards

Apart from dogfighting it's the best fighter there is (after F22)
>>
>>131624283
It's not about the incompetence of the designers, it's more about the higher brass that doesn't know what the fuck it wants and can't understand basic design notions.
See: The Development of the M2 Bradley (if you don't want to research or read you can watch the film Pentagon Wars)
Take that and amplify it by 100. But it could also be money embezzling for something that the Lockheed Martin Skunkworks are working on.
Who knows
>>
>>131623470

The funny thing is, they could have opted for cheaper alternatives but they just had to have A FUCKING RAMP on that piece of shit, so now it's the only aircraft they can use.
>>
>>131624149
Slightly offtopic: I can't be the only one who would love to watch Kylie squat down and curl out a large boomerang shaped girliepoop? Right?
>>
>>131624376
When it actually FLIES maybe. A whole fleet of them was grounded recently because the software that automated the maintenance scheduling broke. Fucking maintenance scheduling, Why the fuck does it have an onboard program to automate the maintenance scheduling? You could literally get a deck ape to do it with powerpoint instead of spending billions on automating it in a way that doesn't even work. And then there's the ones that are literally gassing their pilots.

It's like it's all a scam or something.

140 includes the RAF, they won't fly from the carriers. I'm afraid the figure of 12 per carrier by 2023 is correct. Big hat, no cattle.

>>
>>131624642
Oh please. It's not the first fucking time an aircraft has problems on launch.
The reason for them grounding every plane is to ensure that the problem isn't widespread. Which is why you see car companies recall hundreds of thousands of cars because they found a problem with one that could be dangerous to the passengers.

The pilots that has actually used the F-35 gave mostly positive things about it. Dogfighting should not even be a subject here since it wasn't made for dogfighting.
Just read about it is my suggestion, the norwegian pilot that has 2200 flight hours in the F-16 complemented it on the offensive use, accelerate and obviously the massive tech advantages.

The problems with the F-35 was overblown like crazy, some "experts" even said that the F-35 might not even handle the initial operational test and evaluation by 2020 or 2019. And yet, the F-35 handled it just fine earlier THIS year.

It's like launching a standard battleship but only being able to afford two cannons.
Or a new type of rifle but only 5 bullets.

And they're fucking squandering money on TWO of these.

The a10 is the best jet going at the moment, it's designed to take hits and fly on one engine. The engines are actually out of a business jet so parts are easily sourced too.

solution:

- reclassify as "optionally manned drone" to avoid fixed wing aircraft issue
- give to army/marines

I like the A-10C but its mostly only good for fighting shitskins that have no anti air defences, against a modern army it is going to be relegated to dropping bombs and mavericks from high altitude which a jet like the F35 can do more easily with more high tech weapons and be less at risk from enemy fighters

We don't buy 'nukes' from anyone. The warheads are ours. You're confusing 'nukes' with missiles...
We *lease* trident missiles from the US. We have to dock in North Carolina to get them changed out according to the maintenance schedule. (US subs also use trident)
We have no independent delivery mechanism.

Don't feel bad. MOD uses this confusion to pretend we have an independent deterrent (we don't).

I see now.
Also, is France currently developing a 5th gen fighter?

>Needing planes to retain 'power'.
How have all those planes worked out for you?

Truth is war is changing, and so is how power is exercised.

Not that I know (5th gen only means stealth though, and detection means evovle very fast, so...).
There's some fancy drones made with the Brits.

Borrowing, you fucking retard. Hosting implies we can't use them. We can very well use them, and if we can't we'll dump them into the port.

He's clearly a yank.

I don't know what these Americans' have a problem. They have plenty of aircraft carriers - unless they think one British aircraft carrier can defeat 5 American ones, which is entirely probable.

You foreigners make me laugh. One minute you're screaming at liberal news and mediums calling them all sorts of names, and the next your sharing them to prove your deranged points.
>>
>>131624543
This is correct. Same problem with the LCS and DDG1000. The problem is nobody knows how to design AND nobody knows how to fight a proper war anymore.
>>
>>131626221
>What fucking retards approved of this?
It's was probably in part to jerk off American politicians.
You rub me off I - rub you off kind of deal.
>>
>>131624283
You say that like our current fighters didn't have horribly slow and grossly over-budget development cycles as well. The F-16 killed quite a few pilots, and it was called "Lawn Dart" because if it's engine flamed out the plane would literally just nose over straight into the ground. The worst the F-35 has done so far was having the possible risk of hypoxia if the O2 system failed, which happens a lot on plenty of other jets.

/k/ is full of "muh america" larpers that will claim anything american is superior to anything else, they still defend autoloaders on tanks

going there is pointless, it's all MUH USA!!!! faggots that are too drunk on america to think rationally and admit an american weapon is ever inferior
>>
>>131658631
you should do it anyway, screencap their obviously biased replies then post them whenever someone tells you to make a thread there

Meanwhile Italy has already started building them locally in order to equip two micro-carriers.
Plans are for 90 planes total

they'll just use it as evidence of me getting "btfo"

I used to post lengthy fact-based posts on why autoloaders were retarded and many american guns were inferior to european or russian ones, and of course I'd just get swarmed with COMMIE FAGGOT KEK LOSER WOOO USA USA USA #1 SLAVSHIT FUCKER

It's just a board for dumb people to pretend to be muh murrika operators, it's pathetic. The sad part is all the english language gun forums are even worse, full of absolute patriotards that will always claim the american weapon is better, even when it's a piece of shit with poor engineering like the ar15, f35, or american tanks.
>>
>>131659207
how would screenshots of supposedly biased, baseless, dogpiling replies be proof of you being "btfo"?

The carrier is actually modular and can have its skate park removed and replaced with slingy wingies.
>>
>>131659837
Originally, yes, QE was capable of retrofitting CATOBAR, but that was scrapped due to costs and she's a Cuck Ramp STOL for life.

Prince of Wales is intended to have the CATOBOR retrofit option but I'm willing to bet a crumpet she's going to get that option axed too.

>>
>>131660358
It's still modular because its literally how it was designed, you mean the original plan had catobar but was cut because of cost, it still has the ability to swap out any section of the carrier pretty easily.
>>
>>131623470
Everything about this country is going down the shitter. It's only natural that the military follows suit.
