We were practically a republic after Cromwell since the monarchy had no real power at least by George III. Parliament made all our decisions so your claim that a republic would have treated the colonies better is silly since we were already a republic in all but name. I also don't see how the colonies could have been treated better; we didn't tax them until after the Seven Years War and they were much better places to live than the French or Spanish colonies.

The British sentiment to the colonies wouldn't have changed, America still would become indipendant, Cromwell tried to ensure heriditry rule for his children. Britain learnt a valuable lesson after their own civil war and the American Revolutionary War, and that was give the people and the colonies self government. This is something the other European powers failed to do.
