Hey guys I have a question.
How can people conjure up an imaginary reality that has more tangible significance than the present? That is to say, how can people deny themselves what they want in the present to get what they want in the future? How can we act in a manner that is discordant to what we want in the present without lying to our present selves?
We see this all the time, from great dramas to our own lives that people will say no to themselves. A monk on a hunger strike, or you on a diet. What is the motivation behind that discipline? Can someone learn it?

Fear about having nothing, losing everything, and dying etc...
I have chronic neck pain for 8 years now. I knew in college i had to work very hard to get a good job with insurance. I feel like a slave to have insurance to keep seeing doctors. Necessity drives me

Can a motivation to do what we do - that we don't want at the present - come only from emotion?
Is the fear necessary to do what is good?
I for example frequently can only do what I want to have done that is contrary to impulses when I'm angry at myself for the previous time I hadn't done what I should. That is to say, for me to do what's right I have to have recently failed at something else.
It seems unideal.
