I live in Virginia, and breaking down my salary (not including benefits), make around $24 an hour. I also live in Northern Virginia since I didn't want to work in fucking Richmond or go back home to Virginia Beach.

Two-bedrooms (houses/apartments/condos) here, even way out in fucking Loudoun cost close to $2500-2900 for something decent. Richmond is significantly less, probably around $1500, Virginia Beach is now around the $1700-1900 mark for a two bedroom.

I can barely afford to pay less than 30% of my take-home on rent, how do people making less than me, let alone people on minimum wage afford to live anywhere without government or family assistance boggles my mind. Even if you worked 80 hours/2 jobs @ 7.25/hr you're still only making $2300 BEFORE taxes.

My husband covers that, I cover groceries, electric, cable, and other things. Neither of us make that amount per hour after taxes yet (husband furthering degree in the health industry), but we are smart enough with finances that neither of us are in debt, we put about $50 per week in savings or more, and are still able to splurge on our off-days for going out on dates or do recreational activities we both enjoy.

It isn't rocket science to budget. We are actually looking for a house now, since rent keeps going up and land is an investment.

The price of housing and goods rises as minimum wadge rises. In Colorado, the minimum wage is $9.30/hour, and in Georgia it's $7.25/hour. Anyways, there are quite few strategies for this.

First, get a good job or get a somewhat decent job with a spouse. 2 bedrooms is enough to house a couple and 1-2 children or create a guest room.

Another is to move to a rural area where homes are superbly cheap and where you get a taste of Grade-A real American culture and community as a bonus (unless you're unlucky enough to find yourself in an opioid/meth center).

Also, you could just wait it out. As more people grow old and retire, workers will become more valuable and hopefully automation won't drown out the flow of new jobs.

I am 25 years old, like it matters. I live in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 2 story apartment unit for 660 per month. (650 + I chose &10/mo for pest control if I need it)

For the last month, my brother and his boyfriend (my two roommates, 19 and 20 like it matters) have not been working. I have supported the house all by my lonesome.
