Venezuela is not real socialism. Real socialism hasn't been tried yet.

With the type of system Venezuela has, you need a leader who can inspire and educate the people. Chavez fit that bill to the T, to the point it saved his life after the Coup where the only reason he wasn't taken to quietly executed in Columbia, was because the poor, whom Chavez made a point to educate on how the government worked, revolted against the coup forces of big business and the military.

Even when you had a downturn of oil prices and the polices not panning out, Chavez was able to at least keep the system working to some degree. When he died, the dream died with him.
