I haven't used Windows years and from what I've heard about Windows 10 I never will again. Having in the file explorer is enough to be done with it but it seems like more and more they're taking an Apple approach and closing systems up in an attempt to make them idiot proof. I don't like the idea of being forced to do things the way that companies want me to do them.

This is one of the reasons that I'll never buy an Iphone or an Ipod. In order to use those things you have to go through Itunes and deal with that bullshit. I know you can pull some fuckery in order to transfer files onto them like you would on any other device but it's the principle of the matter. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops in order to pull off such a simple operation.

Small shit never works, and it's endless.
Sometimes the screen will never wake from sleep. It'll stay black, even though the machine wakes back up.
The Bluetooth hardware randomly won't be recognized.
Sometimes, the pop-up toolbars to show Volume/Battery/Screen Brightness disappear. Restart to fix.
Trying to back out of a menu in the Settings will crash the app.

This is off the top of my head, and problems I've encountered just the past couple days.
There's tons of these.
Every time an update fixes some of them, it adds new ones. You'll never get a clean desktop experience.

Anyone privacy conscious should take basic precautions beyond their OS.
All routers are inherently insecure as manufacturers are untrustworthy. Flashing OpenWRT or some other secure firmware is a requirement.
Never browse outside of a virtualized environment with randomized hardware IDs.
Always use a VPN with a proven track record against law enforcement.
Browsers often betray information about you as they answer version/OS queries on demand. If you have to keep using Firefox/Chromium-based browsers at least disable all scripts.

Then again, you always have to assess the adversary's means. If you somehow get yourself targeted by an agency, you are fucked more likely than not.

I actually haven't even used gnome for about a year now which is definitely outside the norm for me if you consider the entire previous decade beforehand.

There's still agarillion Linux APIs which can make things a little annoying but it's a completely different animal now than it was going back even just a few years. Always improving.

One thing I can say though, is that most regular people who are too afraid to even open up a terminal prompt can use a variety of flavors of Linux these days without trouble.

On a side note, I was asked by a guy a few days ago who was watching me on my office computer "what program" I was using... I was using CentOS, and I couldn't make him understand that CentOS wasn't a Windows program, it was a totally different OS. Nothing I could say could get through to him haha. At one point he asked me if I could "close Cent for a minute and open up IE so he can check his email before lunch". I almost slapped him literally.

Either I'm in contact with people who learned most of computer stuff by themselves and at least know what linux is or I deal with people who are 'monkey click tiny pictures' people in which case I speak slowly and in very short sentences when computers are a theme of the day. I even gained some notoriety in office last time the router sperged cause I rebooted it through the web interface instead of running all the way down the hall and resetting it physically :)
