Legacy software and hardware.

If I were to give an example, the best one is for electronic firing. It's closed system, but Windows XP. The person who wrote the software did so for XP and it hasn't been updated because there's no way of implementing it with the hardware, or running it on a new operating system. The only time it's going to get an upgrade is when HM Forces are issued new rifles.

Same story with loads of stuff, many of which will be used on RN ships. Certain things will be state of the art or at the very least up to date, others will run software that's 20 years out of date because no one has come up with something better in the meantime.

There will be a few systems that run XP because that's all they can run, because no one is updating a CIWS every 2 years to sell to the general public. It's a 20 year cycle.

Yes and no - the military still uses tons of commerical OSes, including older ones. A lot of virtualization goes on. Generally they use the oses that where in use when the product was in use. Only critical systems will use a custom OS, and that mostly due to fears of backdoors.

>>

It very well might do. However, there are certain systems that will require Windows XP usage - same across the USN. As I mentioned in >>131524867, the USN is entirely reliant on a DOS system to launch missiles.
>>
>>131524668
You might be shocked. For example, UK trident subs still used XP (or did so 3 years ago, have not checked more recently.)

There still a business of selling XP licences that were horded when Microsoft was getting ready to pull the plug on it.

>Linux
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>

Technologial retarded here, can they hack a ship even if the sistems arent conected to the internet? I mean I see no reason to have the computers controling your ship, ion the same network as a computer conected to the internet.

I'm not questioning that, I'm questioning why they would connect the computer in charge of regulating cabin pressure and o2 levels with whatever comms equipment they use. Further more looking into stuxnet, the vector was the industrial manufactures of computer parts for the nuke plants themselves, meaning your point is moot.
>>
>>131525193
Only if they can get the infection in to the system physically, such as through USB or some shit. The most important part of this though is that it's not actually XP as you and I know, it's made specifically for military ships and is still maintained. The only reason there is so much fuss over this is because nobody knows enough about this stuff yet tries to pretend they do by publishing bullshit stories with bullshit headlines.

>>
>>131525501
The vector was getting stupid employees to bring infected flash drives past the airgap. Yes, the virus targeted a specific model of centrifuge, but they used flash drives to get the virus to the machine.

I'd assume US nuke subs are airgapped, but you still have to worry about something crossing the airgap with a flash drive or any other media they use to program the airgapped system.

Pretty standard stuff, plus it just makes sense to want to be a manufacturer of chips, make big $

What I don't get is why they still aren't putting all USB ports on airgapped systems behind a lockable metal lid so you don't get retards plugging random zip disquettes in supposedly closed systems.

>>
>>131537197
This is what happens.

Lets say in your case (Aircraft control), they design software that does a specific job for a sizable amount of money.

then you have a whole suite of custom software that works in Windows 16 bit, (Modern windows will not run old 16 bit software. Thus no more Chip challenge) So to update to a modern OS you need to spend million writing new software.

Or you can spend 10,000 to a contractor to keep the old system running and deal with it. I know too much about this is that I run my own business and that business is to maintain and supply old software. I was reselling XP licences till a year ago when I sold my last 25 licences. (I kept five for testing/personal use)

The computers are not networked, so the only question is if they are reliable, and the specific version of Windows 2000 (It uses NT 5.0, not 5.1) is built to UNIX level reliability. Of course, it not really compatible with most windows software, but that a strong point.
>>
>>131518746
The idea that an entire aircraft carrier with thousands of separate and independent systems is "running outdated windows XP" is just stupid.

Someone capped a screenshot that had XP in it, do we even know what system that is? If it's networked to others or even has a NIC installed? What other firewalls and protections are in place?

There's probably a wide range of OS's running on a wide range of systems, context actually matters.
>>
>>131546612
even if it was "XP" it was most likely a variant of BAE systems "Windows for warships) which is a licenced fork of NT 5.0 (Windows 2000) developed for the Submarine Command System Next Generation (SMCS NG) then used elsewhere.

>>131547399
Yep, there's 100's of legally forked OS's out there. I happen to know there's ATMs in the UK that still use XP, you can see them BSOD from time to time.

It's not a stock install of XP, it's going to be a stripped down version with a lot of the security issues taken care of by customizing the OS. Most of these special use cases go through their own security audit process because they're often put into dedicated hardware that's designed to last 20-30 years.

Other posters in this thread are also right, XP almost certainly is not the oldest code running on that ship.

Vista here, sadly going to have to upgrade soon, computer is slowly going downhill even though I've replaced most of the older parts.
>>
>>131547929
Yep, most of the ATMs over here run OS/2.

Yep, the BAE system is a NT 5.0 system that only lets code signed for by BAE to run on it. Not to say it can't be hacked but it not allowed to communicate outside its LAN, and so to get on the network with those computers requires you to have physical access to the computers, and a false BAE sign off.

BAE used the Windows 2000 system since at the time it was the best off the self OS that could encrypt a hard drive and have active directory support, and Microsoft was more then happy to licence the code to the BAE as they knew BAE wasn't going to go and sell it for home computers, as no one would want to use it as it user unfriendly due to the security stuff.

>>131550205
Prior to Windows 2000/XP (which for most folks is almost the same thing) Windows was running on top of DOS, and was really clunky.

XP (and 2000) where based off NT, which was 32 bit system and designed to be much more stable as it was for servers and workstations. Since computers got more powerful, Microsoft made windows out of NT.

XP/2000 was the first system that people could buy from a major vendor that was reasonably stable, 32 bit, and had a huge install base. It just worked well and if microsoft kept patching it and selling it people would still be buying it.

It has a major issue with security, but most of the military systems modify it to avoid those issues.

A lot of the reasons why folks use the system is it cheaper to keep up a old system then write and test (and then train staff) on new software.
>>
>>131550642
Linux has it own security issues - such as the Debian randomization failure that was undetected for over two years.

Since BAE was able to build the OS from the code, and make modifications as needed, it is no more or less secure then grabbing linux code.
