Forgot to say that melting a small hole is what armour piercing weapons do by using shaped charges and copper liners. Something like an anti tank middle makes a similar diameter hole to the laser but fires a blob of copper through it too.
All the explosion from an anti armour missile is simply to propel a 'beam' of copper, it looks impressive but the explosion itself wouldn't destroy armour without the copper penetrator.

This sounds impressive to the layman but the "target" could have been a balloon for all we know.

Lasers that destroy things and aircraft aren't compatible. The biggest bottleneck with lasers is that they need big, heavy power sources so always be skeptical of anything involving lasers and aircraft.

They're having enough problems deploying a usable laser on a SHIP but you're expected to believe they have a viable one mounted on a helicopter?

iirc it was only one prototype and it was determined to be a dead end. It has never been tried since.

It goes against all common sense that early, successful lasers, a weapon requiring a heavy, bulky power source will be deployed on an aircraft. The first viable units will be ground based, then mounted on ship and vehicles. aircraft will come last.

>>131516845

No, we haven't. We built a few oversized prototypes that were too large to put into a plane and then we scrapped the whole project when we realized that the weight of the shielding you'd need to protect the crew would be about the weight of the plane itself.

The Russians, however, did build a tiny test reactor and put it into a plane. They flew it a couple times, turned it on once, made the same realization we did about shielding, and shelved it.

Top Gun time
Then the defensive laser will also be used for dog fighting.
This could make missiles far less useful unless redesigned to resist laser fire
>>
>>131517765
Defensive maybe. Unless there is a big jump n tech sometime soon lasers will only be viable as defensive counter-sensor weapons. The energy levels required to actually destroy things cannot currently be packaged into a combat aircraft imo.

It might be possible in something like a dedicated heavy lifting cargo plane, maybe, if you fill the whole thing with a powerplant.

Jews believe that Aryans are descendents of a nephilim called Amalek. The Amalekites were present in Canaan when the kikes decided to march in and take it. They described the Amalekites as giants.
>>
>>131517200
True but you loose ballistics because the projectile isn't dense enough, rail guns cant fire lead or other nonferrous materials.
And in order to get those speeds you need a very long gun far longer then can be mounted in a helicopter.

>>
>>131516468
Actually goobert, they dont. the big heavy power source is a gas powered turboshaft that happens to be the helicopter's engine.

The laser likely uses a capacitor array for power.

Let me...open your eyes a little...bit of an optics joke; a lasers biggest problem is the atmosphere acting as a lens, refracting the beam outside of a usable wavelength that will be absorbed the given target, thus destroying the target.

That is the biggest problem. It is solved by a low power spotter laser that is used to sample the atmosphere, in a given environment, which as an aircraft will change greatly, and then if the equipment allows, focus the beam as needed.

now you know. dont talk again. kthxbye

That's an extremely short range weapon for a helicopter. Unless it's hitting targets much further away, it's rather useless in its current form.

Mirrors alone would not truly protect versus powerful enough lasers. Mirrors reflect *most* of the light. Considering the amount of power needed to burn through armor would be pretty high, the small % of absorbed light would still be enough to foul the avg. mirror, ruining reflectivity, and thus taking the rest of the light. On a ground target a mirror finish is also a threat to friendlies for the short moment the mirror reflects.

What you want are armors that can either take a lot of heat, or quickly disperse it

That would defeat the purpose of the weapon. I'm assuming once the lasers become powerful enough, they could be used as a nearly silent and invisible way to sniper an enemy many miles away.
>>
>>131516468
The big 747 mounted lasers were chemical reaction lasers. You stick a couple of chemicals in a reactor vessel that don't like each other and focus the resulting energy. I'd guess that's what this thing is. No batteries, per say, but a limit on how much chemical reactant you can carry plus how many times the reactor vessel can stand up the necessarily hot and somewhat violent reaction before it blows up.

Many decades in the future that would be feasible if the military wants to alloacate a significant amount of time and money toward laser technology. This. The Brits usually come up with off the wall shit that wins wars. Americans make it mass producible. A prime example is the radar cavity magnetrons the British came up with that were far superior to anything anyone else had in WWII. The problem was, they were precision machined and took an inordinately long time to machine. American manufacturers figured out how to make them out of stamped metal plates that were welded together with a negligible loss in performance.

lasers shoot down missles all th etime

>>131510959
Wait until they slowly reveal the ones that can be fired from satellites.

Lasers heat up what they hit very fast, which leads to material being vaporised and melted.

Tje amount of destruction is based on its power level. It could go anywhere from making the surface glow red to burning a hole straight through it with a large explosion of vaporised material.

>I sexually identify as an attack helicopter. Ever since I was a boy I dreamed of soaring over the oil fields, dropping hot sticky loads on disgusting foreigners. People say to me that a person being a helicopter is impossible and I'm retarded, but I don't care. I'm beautiful. I'm having a plastic surgery to install rotor blades, 3mm cannons and AMG 114 Hellfire missiles...on my body. From now on I want you guys to call me Apache and respect my right to kill from above and kill needlessly. If you can't accept me, you're a heliphobe and you need to check your vehicular privilege. Thank you for being so understanding.

Shit wont be usefull any nearby time. Energy will remain rmain a bottleneck for a very long time. Batteries or chemicals doesnt matter.

They did, in the 1970s or 1980s. UN convention on blinding lasers.

It only prohibits the use of lasers specifically to destroy a combatant's eyesight permanently. You can use them for all other purposes including as dazzle lasers. Destroying a combatant's eyesight in the process of a lawful use of lasers is also allowed (e.g. you're using a laser to disable the sensor on a helicopter and it slips and hits the pilot in the face).

The main fear was that ground-based lasers would be used against helicopter or plane pilots to blind them, but blinding lasers never really took off anyway because as soon as you start using them the enemy's just going to start issuing goggles to pilots.

This was on ED's entry for women back in 07. There was another one of a woman with her hands on her crotch in a car that was captioned to imply that she'd better keep it warm for you.

And then a picture of Hypatia's golden rule with "women were made to be objectified"
